Thanks. I'll go back through my records and try to figure out who sold me the unit--I've lost track. I sincerely doubt it is sand--I positioned the head near the surface to keep it away from the substrate. I thought these units were state of the art, but I am beginning to wonder.

Power heads--what am I doing wrong?

My third Koralia power head since setting up the tank in June has died. The first two, I figured out, were the victim of the play sand I had as substrate. Replaced that with pool filter sand, and that has solved that problem (at least, judging by the complete lack of sand in the Fluval canister filt...

I just changed the sand out in my 125g, from play sand (which was too fine and getting in impellers, no matter what) to pool sand. Making matters worse, I had an ich outbreak, my first, and in early stage, just a couple of fish showing. Since I needed to do a 50-percent water change anyway and I tho...

Ich and my python

The dreaded ich showed up on Friday. I'm now in treatment mode, with the second (of a planned four) water change just completed. I'm wondering about my python. I have two tanks, the infected 125 gallon with my clown loaches and a 90-gallon cichlid tank. Obviously, I don't want to contaminate the cic...

Thanks to everyone for getting back. After posting this plea, I did some online searching and have determined that I should switch sands. I now have play sand, and from everything I've read, pool filter sand might help solve the problem, it having heavier grains. Any input regarding merits of play s...

Sand substrate, powerheads and my FX5

I've had my 125 g tank up since May. The first powerhead lasted a couple of days, then died. Now, the replacement is dead. I suspect that sand might be involved, although I'm not sure. I'm also concerned about sand getting into my FX5 canister. It's happening. Questions: 1. Regarding the powerhead, ...

I used to patronize the locally owned LFS, but no longer. Besides being more expensive than Petsmart, the fish weren't as healthy, which was reflected in the seven-day guarantee, half the warrantee Petsmart offers. At least where I live, the Petsmart is pretty good. Petco, that's a different story.

It can take many months to earn the trust of clown loaches. My 8ft clown loach tank has a 6 foot long cove/cave that they congregate in and out of. They also have a few dozen pvc pipes that they nestle/rest/sleep in. Like already mentioned, low lighting helps a lot. Took awhile, but yes: They have,...

Maybe I missed this, but what kind of Loaches are they? Many Loaches will hide at first, until they become comfortable, then there are others which seem to explore the tank at first and then become more sedentary, retreating to hiding places. I found my Kuhli Loaches were like this. Although I have...

I think there are plenty of hiding places--that seems to be the problem, LOL. Tonight, however, one is venturing out, with the lights on and everything. No problems so far with aggression between species.

Why are my loaches so shy?

Just getting started in the loach biz and have the following set-up: 125 gallon with a Fluval FX5 and a 1200 GPH powerhead, with sand substrate, plastic plants, some fake driftwood and flat river stones for hiding spots. Water is 80 degrees. Tank mates include a half-dozen black tetras, a half-dozen...
