If they're anything like dojo loaches, they will try to escape the tank. Dojos do, for sure, and it's quite possible that this is a more generalized loach trait. All you can do is keep the tank well covered and seal up any and all holes large enough for him to fit through. It sounds like your blue loaches can store oxygen in their bodies like Dojos do, and can therefore live outside of the tank for a little while, if they don't dry out.

I'm not surprised that other loaches besides dojos also try to escape.

One more possible reason could be temperature? Is you tank the right temperature for you species of loach? Maybe he's trying to get out because he's too warm or too cold.

More likely than not, this is normal behavior for loaches of many species.

When I first got my Blue's a couple of years back, I lost one to jumping. It jumped the very first night :( Somehow it managed to lift the plastic piece that is attached to the glass lid. I found it dried up behind the tank the next day.
