Still, I think not nuch is wrong with using sponges, if one uses enough. I have a 400 * 100 * 70 cm tank with 2 filters, each 30 cm wide, with 30 cm worth of sponges. Obviously they measure 70 cm hight. This comes down to 126 liters of active filter volume, in a 2800 liter tank, or 4.5 %

Most often people use 1 % or less - and are surprized the results are different
