rivertank air stone mod

Post by Erik » Tue Feb 21, 2006 9:46 pm

My rivertank uses just powerhead but it's beastly 369gph so the output is fed into a diy 7/8inch 8 inch long spray bar providing quite a bit of wide current.
No proper way to add into the powerhead so today I picked up 7 inch bubble bar and zip tied it to the bottom of the spray bar. Works like a charm I think the hillies and friends are enjoying it.
I post a pick later.

Sounds cool Erik. I recommend the Rena long ceramic airstones. I've had 3 for ages and they never seem to clog unlike virtually everything else I've tried.

Very interesting. I can't wait to see the pics.
Like Martin, I recommend the Rena air stones, also...if you can find them.
They work great and if they do ever get clogged, you just soak them in hydrogen peroxide for a day or two.
Petsmart is apparently discontinueing them so I bought a few the other day at about half price.

Petsmart eh Jim? I'll have to check that out. They're not cheap, so half price would be nice  . Maybe some for 'stock'.

Look in the discontinued item rack instead of the location of all the other airstones. I picked up two of the four inch and two of the two inch.Oddly, though, I noticed that one Petsmart I was in still had them at regular price.

I had seen the rena ones but they were not as lon as the marineland ones so that is what I got.
Here it is. Next I am building a java fern back wall with plastic landcape mesh. That way the rocks get more light to grow algae which should force the hillies to eat there as long as I keep the glass clean.

That looks awesome Erik! Image a veritable maelstrom :D The fish will love it.

Jim, I checked out Petsmart today. They had zero Rena airstones, but they seem to have in a whole new range of air products. Another company who's name now escapes me :? They actually had very similar looking airstones and the prices were cheaper than Rena. Might give one a try sometime.

Thanks
That is with the air pump on it's lowest setting. hagen made these air pumps called force2 that have adjustable output by twisting a ring which slides the dual diaphrams either closer or farther from the dual magnet arms.
The the output goes from 300-3000 CC a minute. Mine is dated 1998 but never seen one anywhere except the one I bought (from petsmarts a few years back)

Oh yes, I saw those too. I think the brand was Top Fin.
They probably cleared out the Renas to make way for that brand.
Are you sure that the Renas were not on a discount rack? I had to look a bit to find the ones I bought.
One thing good about Petsmart, they frequently discontinue items and discount them deeply. I bought impellors for most of my powerheads and filters that way a couple of years ago.
