OK, I'm starting to really enjoy the angelfish. (I only got them so the kuhli tank wouldn't look empty.) The big gold one has bright orange eyes now, very attractive, and they all eat from my fingers in a frenzy.

Your angels are gorgeous!! When I kept angels they wouldn't stop fighting, even actually biting lumps out of each other. Evil or Very Mad

Sorry to hijack your post but i am considering Kuhli's and do they always hide and how many do you have?
Anything you feel like adding would be great.
Thanks - joe

Kuhlis aren't a hijack; they were the raison d'etre for setting up the tank Smile

They tend to hide during the day, and prefer to come out when it's dark. Mine have a half-inch high "cave" beneath a piece of acrylic that makes them feel safe, but I can still peer in and count all six, almost every day.

My timer is set so their "night" starts at 4:30 pm; that way I can put food in there with the lights off right before I leave (this is at work, remember) and the angels can't see to gobble it all. Kuhlis easily find their food in the dark, scrounging along on the floor of the tank with their cute little barbels.

Frozen stuff is apparently VERY yummy! I give them mosquito larvae, bloodworms and brine shrimp, and they love them all.

What is the difference between mosquito larvae & bloodworms? I always thought they were the same!!

Blood worms are the larva of something else.
Mosquito larva are occasionally packaged as "White Worms". They are not worms, but a frozen cube does sort of look white (or at least pale) Cannot in any way be mixed up with bloodworms.

Bloodworms are midge larvae. Midges look kind of like mosquitoes, but don't bite.
Kuhlis also love the Hikari Sinking Wafers (not to be confused with the Hikari Sinking Algae Wafers) and Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets.
If I leave the lights on, the angelfish instantly become enthusiastic bottom feeders.
It's 4:20 and the tank lights just went off; the angels are scurrying around excitedly -- they know food is about to arrive! And their 7:30 AM feeding is barely a memory by now.

My cousin used to have angels in his tank.
( his tank got me hooked on aquaria)

His angels used to change colour when food was offered.
From almost white with no markings to striped red-eyed killing-machines in the blink of an eye. Shocked

Very cool

These don't change colors at feeding time, but act like rabid wolves whenever anyone gets close to the tank. My supervisor was just pulling a file down from above their tank, and they crowded up against the glass as if starving. He declined my offer to let him handfeed them.

lovely semi-gold veil tail you have there. probably female. the others are a bit young to tell. watch for ovipositor (female) and papilla (male) extension along the ventral line. your gold is already showing.

keep an eye out for breeding/pairing behavior. if you have a couple males there will be war shortly and if you have more than one female the dominant one (I'd bet on the veiltail) will go after the other. if that starts try putting a couple of pieces of slate on opposite ends of the tank leaning against the side at an angle. that may help them define territories and keep the carnage to a minimum. the eggs will probably get eaten, but it's fun to see them doing what comes naturally.
who knows? you may end up with two pairs. Cool

angels are fun, interactive fish, practically fearless, but can (often) be very aggressive among themselves.

The bully, believe it or not, is one of the smaller two, the dark one in the fourth photo in this thread. I've seen him chase each of the others at one point or another, and everybody runs from him. No pieces are missing from anyone's fins, yet, but now you've got me worried. Shocked

i believe it. Cool
his flat ventral line leads me to think male and one look at that eye ...lol!

it won't be fins that they go for so much as eyes and the sides of the body. the fins will suffer due to stress, eventually.

don't worry, your forewarned so you're forearmed. Laughing
