Missed the potential peak foliage last weekend due to the car overheating because of a leaky heater core. Got it fixed now, so we went out today. Heavy winds have blown off most of the colour now, but I got these shots to show the effects and the last Autumnal hues.

We've got the same thing going on here. I went out yesterday to look for colors and while there are a few nice looking trees, they are surrounded by brown oaks or trees with no leaves at all.Jim Powers wrote:We still had some nice colors, particularly individual trees here and there, but some rains on Friday really knocked much of those leaves off.
The remaining leaves are mostly on the oaks that stay on longer but turn from red to brown.
The only brightly colored trees left are part of imported landscaping.

No pictures, but 'Fall Color'...
Lantana (several varieties in reds, yellow and purple), Oleander (last flowers fell off last week), Garrya is budding up, Pistache (the ornamental) is showing fantastic fruit color, Pyracantha fruit is coloring up, Geraniums are still going strong, and Bougainvillia is still showing in all its glory. Deodar Cedars across the street are shedding yellow pollen on my truck.
The hills are greening up, too, after being 'California blond' all summer.
Leaf color... Uh... not much.
Liquidambar (Reds, yellows and blends, depends on variety. Some are still green)
Red Maple (Acer rubrum, turning deep purple-red)
Poplar (yellow)
Purple Leaf Flowering Plum has been purple all summer. Hard to tell if it is 'turning' at all. Leaves just fall off. (They have not started falling)
Raywood Ash is starting to turn its rich purple-red.
The ornamental Pistache colors up the brightest red.
Most deciduous trees here just sort of turn ugly brown, then drop their leaves. Sycamore, Birch, Walnut, Ash, Deciduous Oaks, fruit trees... some get a little yellow, along with the brown.
If I went up the local mountain and took a picture of the valley similar to several shots from 'Back East' I could likely get the 'Smoky Mountain' look of layered hills in the mist, but the 'Fall Color' would not even be one tree in 10. The better reds would not even be one out of 100. Most of the trees grown here are evergreen, both broad leaf and conifers.
There are shrubs and flowers in color all year round.

Last Saturday was glorious and we went on a 480 odd kilometer drive up into the Kawarthas region of Ontario.
Some birds we saw...........
The river at Holland Marsh, just north of Toronto.
Mucho Pumpkins.
Nice setting for a house.
Part of the Trent-Severn Canal.
Token Cadillac shot for Jim.
This is Rural Route 13, Southwood road. It runs around 25 kms of twists, turns, dips and brows and is very popular with all sorts of driving fans.
Motorcyclists love it.
Another token (for scale) Cadillac shot.
The road between Port Carling and Bracebridge.
Back closer to Toronto.
Martin.
