Levamisole

Sully- I hope the good Dr. and all his Veternarian buddies are correct about this dosage.
With this dosage, 1 bottle of Levamisole Pig Dewormer will treat 2,400 gallons of water. This is going to save everyone alot of $. I'll be treating all my tanks, about 500 gallons of water, with this 2mg/l dosage a few times over the next month or so.
Thanks for going the extra mile on this subject.

mikev to clarify why you would need more Levamisole Hydrochloride. It is because of the size of the molecule. Levamisole is C11H12N2S (I pulled this formula off a website) and Levamisole HCL is C11H12N2S.HCL. So If you know the formula you can figure out the Grams/mole off the periodic table with is ~204.32g/mole (rounded to hundreth) for levamisole and ~240.78g/mole for Levamisole HCL cause of the HCL attachment. Anywho if you know you need 50mg of Levamisole and you want to use Levamisole HCL but want the same concentration of the Levamisole base you need to to a bit of conversion which works like this. 50mg=.05g then divide that by 204.32 to get moles which is 2.447. Then because its 1:1 (1 mole levamisole each basically) you take 2.447 times 240.78 (so you get correct weight for added HCL) and you get .0589g which is ~59mg. So the dosages that you stated there would give you the same concentration in the water using 2 different forms of levamisole. I'm sure the added HCL stablizes the molecule and makes it less readily broken down which is why they would use it more often. Sorry if this is way too much chemistry as I'm not sure how else to explain it.

I've had 2mg/l of Levamisole Hydrochloride in my 10g snail tank for 26 hours now. I still see some small planaria crawling on the glass.
These are some tough planaria. Prazipro wouldn't kill them either.
I'll up the the dosage to 2.36mg/l and wait another 24 hours. If that doesn't work, I'll keep raising the dosage by 2mg per day until I kill them.
So the conversion is-
Levamisole at 2mg/l of water = Levamisole Hydrochloride at 2.36mg/l of water
or
Levamisole at 76mg/10 gallon of water = Levamisole Hydrochloride at 90mg/10 gallons of water

Well this Morning, about 13 hours after I raised the dosage to 2.36mg/l, the planaria are no longer crawling on the glass in the 10g snail tank. They are all dead or they all crawled into the gravel. I assume that they are dead though. I'm surprised too.
I assume that the the raised dosage of 2.36mg/l and/or the extra time killed them.
The pH in this tank is 7.6.
I dosed another snail tank that has planaria, with the Levamisole HCl at 2.36mg/l to see if the results are repeated. I'll have results by Tommorow night at the latest.

So much for the betting pool! Good thing.
It should be interesting to see if the results are consistent. Just think. A gang of 10 people could go in on one bottle of the powdered form, cut it up with a razor blade, weigh it, and send it through the mail all over the place to each other.
I see an anthrax scare in the not too distant future... whoops! Maybe not such a good idea...

Levamisole is not available over the counter in the UK you will need to find a vet who can supply it. I have been lucky enough to find a local vet who specialises in exotic pets (yes, fish are exotic). He was aware of the use of Levamisole to treat fish and had most of a 500ml pack of 'Levacide' pig de-wormer left from the last person who was after some. I was able to buy 30ml for £3.52 which should treat our tanks.
I would be very cautious in importing this from overseas, there are usually lots of restrictions on medicines coming into this country.
In case you can't find one locally to you the vet i went to was:

sorry. been basically out of town the past couple of days.
Our discussion was specifically Levamisole hydrochloride.
I hate to work--but old sully needs the money every now and again.

i went back and reviewed the e.mails. I laid out the discussion for Roy. Explaining the Levamisole v. Levamisole basse confusion. I specifically asked about Levamisole hydrochloride dosing.
Interesting the answer came back Levamisole. lol. Was that a quick typing issue--a clear differentiation of Levamisole? I will ask for a quick clarification to be absolutely certain. I can now get directly to him. Instead of the semi circtuitous route used to initially contact him.
I am glad you guys noticed a not so subtle cifference that slipped by me. I simply took the answer within the context of the e.mail and the question asked.
