kuhli like sand

Gravel out, sand in. Tank looks brighter, and it's easier to spot the kuhlis. The new cave is the same hunk of plexiglass (thanks Marsha!) held up by four bottle caps. The kuhlis LOVE it!! And they have fun eeling through the sand and hiding under their Indian Almond Leaf (so do the frogs.)

Just wait until your kuhlis start filtering the sand through their gills. That unnerved me the first time I saw them grazing through the sand and spitting it out of their gills.

They already do suck up sand in their adorable little barbelled mouths, and snort it out through their gills. Fortunately it's round-edged aquarium sand, and doesn't seem to harm them.

It also sticks to their backs for a few seconds after they cavort around, pretending to be Ich, just to see if my heart can survive suddenly jumping to 200 beats per minute.

I love my 3 P.Oblonga. They are so nice and chubby.

There are six kuhlis, one of whom is about 2" and the rest vary up to the longest, who's maybe 2.75" -- none are full grown yet, so I should have years and years with them.

Does anyone know how P.Oblonga do with other species of pangio? I've been thinking about adding some striped kuhlies to my Oblongas once I get my botine species their own tank.

I have P. Oblonga together with P. Meyersi.
They get along fine, all species of Pangio seem to get along with each other.

I was wondering what the honeycomb thing is - is it rock or wood? It looks amazing!

There's white sand with a few pieces of the original tan gravel to spice it up a bit. No white gravel, but some of the close-ups are so magnified that the sand might appear much larger than it is.

The honeycomb thing is a fake log resin aquarium decoration from PetSmart; I think it was around $19.

I just poked half a cube of frozen brine shrimp in under the shelf. WOW.

Apparently the only rule is, "He who eats the most, wins."

I have five species of Pangio together, and they are all mixed up all the time. THey all poke their noses out of caves and the sand together. They don't care. The more the merrier.

I only have 3 Oblonga at the moment. I have to keep moving the ornaments in my tank around at least once a month or I NEVER see them. They just like to hunker down inside the main cave.
