Dwarf chain loach catastrophe, and a valuable lesson about quarantine tanks learned

A bit of a backstory: my cousin who I live with is not an aquarist and is not especially overjoyed about me being on the level of fishkeeping I am (slightly more in depth explanation can be found at, https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/setting-up-my-second-loach-tank.743237/#post-83772...

Re: What dither fish do you use for your loaches?

Update on the school of pictus catfish: only day 3 and they seem to be working! I can therefore recommend them to anyone who needs a dither fish for their clown loaches but wants something different from the usual top-midwater schoolers like tetras or tiger barbs. The dwarf chain loaches are conside...

Black Friday photos!

Got some great loach deals on Black Friday that I thought I'd share photos of. More pictures will be added once they get more settled and are easier to photograph. Taken from: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/something-other-than-clown-loaches.680424/page-5 Dwarf chain loaches (with...

Re: Are weather loaches really unsuitable for tropical tanks?

Just asked the aquarium store. They get their weather loaches from commercial Florida farms, which probably means tropical to near-tropical temperatures year round for those loaches. So, with any luck, they should do well enough in something close to 25 degrees when I get my second 473 liter set up ...

Re: Are weather loaches really unsuitable for tropical tanks?

You're probably right on the danios, mountain minnows, mountain loaches, etc, needing the cooler water since they're from the mountains. I'm really not well versed in their needs just yet  Ultimately, I think your suggestion to find out the source of the weather loaches to get an idea of temper...

Re: Are weather loaches really unsuitable for tropical tanks?

Thank you Bas Pels for some input. I can see why you said weather loaches need summer and winter (since those are the only 2 seasons in subtropical regions, but they are seasons nonetheless and so merit consideration of a seasonal range for subtropical aquarium fish), and I would agree with it, were...

Are weather loaches really unsuitable for tropical tanks?

The reason why I wonder about this is that Loaches Online's very profile for the weather loach, as well as Emma Turner's article on them for Practical Fishkeeping, gives their recommended temperature range as up to 25 degrees. In the wild, Weather loaches live within a surprisingly large temperature...

Re: why can’t I get my water crystal clear

What kind of substrate did you use? It's possible your substrate was dusty and all that filtration isn't allowing the silt to settle.

It may also be that you just have a bacterial bloom.

Either way, if you haven't already, putting activated carbon in the filters is advised.

Re: Staghorn algae and Sewellia

You won't believe this, but I went to Big Al's yesterday and they had some hillstream loaches (species not specified) eating what looked very much like staghorn algae! Seems like yours aren't alone. Of course, every fish has different tastes (just like people), so others' hillstreams may not like it...

If you don't have good luck there, you could try AquaBid too. No experience with it myself but it's pretty popular.

Clown loaches with kuhli loaches - is it really a bad mix?

This mix has been so often not-recommended here on Loaches Online before, due to supposedly differing requirements in flow. For example: https://forums.loaches.com/viewtopic.php?t=5279 Unfortunately, that's going to be a far from ideal mix. *snip*. Clown loaches prefer much more current to that of k...

Re: What dither fish do you use for your loaches?

For what it's worth, I think the tiger barb/clown loach combo works so well because of the fact that they are more or less identical in terms of color and both have a complex social hierarchy with fiesty behavior towards their own kind. That makes me wonder how well tiger barbs will act as dithers f...

What dither fish do you use for your loaches?

The purpose of this thread is to list some effective dithers for the benefit of everyone here. Dithers I plan on using are a school of pictus catfish for my clown loach tank, and roseline sharks, a red tail shark, and either silver dollars or tiger barbs for my mixed loach tank. Effectiveness of eac...

Re: Clown Loaches Not Eating

Agreed on the less maintenance.
Some more bonuses of a greater amount of smaller males that you should know are more space for every fish in the tank, and more colorful clown loaches. Just about every male keeps its bright juvenile colors, but some females get rather washed out with age.

Re: Clown Loaches Not Eating

Thanks for that tip about the AqAdvisor result. I wonder what the criteria for intermediate/advanced are according to them? Happy I could help. I think the intermediate/advanced criteria has to do with how much tank maintenance (replacing water, cleaning filters, etc) a fishkeeper might have experi...
