Re: Temperature for pictus catfish

That's an interesting observation you made about the pictus catfish and the kuhli loaches thriving at lower temperatures than what is typically recommended. It's great to hear that they are showing no signs of health issues and maintaining their appetite and activity levels. Adjusting the temperatu...

When Opportunity Knocks.....

.....answer the door! In my case it's been knocking not once, not twice, but thrice.:D The first knock came shortly before the Black Friday sales: during my pre-sale local pet store scouting, in a tank of well-fed striped kuhlis that absolutely looked worth buying, were also a couple of neon kuhlis!...

Going where no one has ever gone before - and documenting it!

To my archerfish and pictus catfish tank, I want to try and incorporate a male pumpkinseed. I think it is likely the pumpkinseed will get along with both because they don't conflict with similar sized catfish in the wild and may view the archerfish as a mixed species school pumpkinseeds sometimes jo...

Re: 22+ year old (and counting) pictus catfish

Unfortunately, it has been reported (about 1 month ago) that this fish developed a tumor and had to be put down. It is safe to say he was at least 24 years old at the time of death. We had to put him down last week. He had a tumor growing out of his mouth and could not eat anymore. So we decided to ...

Re: Let's talk the little-known built-in biomedia of a tank

OK, you're missing a few points. Both fish poo & uneaten food look exactly the same in filter media or vacuumed out water/debris. How are you telling the difference? & this is based on 1 month's worth of (iffy) data?! Roselines are NOT the same as any goldfish in body mass, food consumption, temp, ...

Re: Let's talk the little-known built-in biomedia of a tank

I'm personally very skeptical it's overfeeding. I have ran into that problem before, but the only times I've ever really overfed them were when they were new and I didn't know just how much food to give, at which point they all got greatly bulging tummies. Now that I know how much to feed, the norma...

Re: Let's talk the little-known built-in biomedia of a tank

Which brings me to my next point. Because of all that biomedia, designating some in your filter that you never or hardly ever rinse is no longer a concern. This is my favorite thing about the built-in biomedia because I can easily rinse out everywhere in my filter that collects gunk 3 times a week,...

Re: Black Friday photos!

Yes, it is very hard to say for sure (hence it's a theory). Every tank being different with all its variables also has to be considered of course.

Perhaps if I can speak with the Ad Konings of Asian fish (whoever that is?), I can obtain some better data. All in the name of less hiding zebra loaches!

Re: Black Friday photos!

Thanks again for telling me about yours, mine hiding has been a fear for me before I considered what factors I had in my favor. I'm hoping the high flow+oxygen and cool temperature in my tank will bring them out like it did the kuhlis. Personally I suspect the reason they are reported to hide as muc...

Re: Black Friday photos!

Bumping this thread because the pet store got zebra loaches in for Black Friday this year! And I have been looking for them since July! :D
Got to put photos here when I get them.

Re: Let's talk the little-known built-in biomedia of a tank

Using the best aquarium filter media will ensure that your aquarium will always be clean. The filter media is responsible for catching most, if not all, of the solid waste suspended in the water. It can, therefore, keep the water clean so that your fish will always be healthy and happy in their art...

Could this be why kuhli loaches are reported to hide so much?

I have seen topic after topic from many members on the loach forum about how their kuhlis (striped and black, it may well be different for the rarer species) are often hiding and mostly or only come out at feeding time. This was what I had noticed from mine until they became always active when I mov...

Re: Let's talk the little-known built-in biomedia of a tank

You are absolutely correct. Both on the total amount of beneficial bacteria only being enough for however many fish+feedings there are, as well as the doubling being a very general formula that doesn't necessarily account for all affecting factors. The thing is, given a well oxygenated tank, there o...

Re: Praise be to silica pool filter sand!

By sand sifting, I did mean spewing through gills, yes. What species you had probably played a part, having striped and black together I only see the black do it. Not yet the striped. Size of the grains is not a problem for them either. The grains do look much larger than one would expect them to l...

Let's talk the little-known built-in biomedia of a tank

The thread on pool filter sand inspired me to make a thread on this. I'd like to go over the obvious, yet often overlooked, built-in biomedia of the average tank, and why having separate mechanical/biomedia in your filter that you do and don't rinse, respectively, is not such a big deal. Let's begin...
