Re: Steel Framing
Bas Pels, Agreed & I'd love to do something less complicated, but this is an island: for anything "special" imported, tack-on at least 50% in shipping & duties. One $400 pane of larger or clearer glass quickly gets well over a grand, and that assumes I don't break it ;) So I buy "off the peg" where ...

Yes, it's true that you can never really go home ... These sorts of fora do seem to be cyclical. Some have ups & downs, most just up and then down. Loaches is a very specific topic, so I guess just doesn't have the critical mass to re-spark - though I'm happy to give it a try! To Nancy's question, I...

Bloat - parasites?
Good and wise, Sorry, not re. the loaches but the African brown/black knife that may soon share a tank with the new clowns (et al) I've owned said knife for about a year. She (according to little backward-pointing anal fin spike) came to me fairly wee and with a bit of a what looked like a bloated b...

Steel Framing
Hi Loach-y-Folk, I don't see people using steel support/reinforcement framing around their tank seams/sides, only glass. Is there a reason? I ask as we're putting an in-wall build into our farmhouse renno; I'm thinking to reduce my glass cost by doing the framing in 1.5" angle-iron on top (pinned ba...

Back at 'er
After a nasty plant-poisoning event (my fault) resulting in loss of all fish incl. my pack of long-time loaches ~6yrs ago, a local importer has brought me back around to Botia with 6 wee clowns (first time they've been imported in >8yrs, it seems). So far they're calmed down, settling in & getting n...

Segrest's got them currently, so could/should be in your local soon.

Re: Freshwater fish in Indonesian Bali island
Interesting that of the 3 species in the picture two of them are invasive. Same thing round here- most rivers are loaded with invasives, mainly same swordtail & guppy from pet-industry breeders. Native/endemic livebreeders/gambusia & killies are having a tough time, but the predatory mullet & gobies...

Re: Clown Loach proof plants?
Aquella, Sounds like he/she's bored. Better to eat the plants than start picking at the sealant silicone seams... Put in a couple of powerheads -Koralia 3 seem to get the job done- mounted in a bunch to generate an area of high current, maybe across the front glass, and some tubular hides- PVC or ba...

Re: New Blue Loach and Community Tank
Diane, I honestly couldn't tell you- temperament in these guys seems highly variable and at least somewhat associated with who or what they're housed with. Mine are nothing short of murderous little stinkers, but they live nicely/peacefully with tetras and angels. The angels are pretty bloodthirsty ...

Re: New Blue Loach and Community Tank
By "Blue" you mean Y. modesta , yes? Orange-fin is another name. They're my favourites. A couple of things: a) a 55 really isn't big enough for clowns.... sorry. Blues are almost as big and they're supposed to grow a little quicker than clowns so your upgrade might be a little sooner. Think about up...

Re: Dyeing
issue is that I've got 1x Y. mod (and an unknown that looks like a Y.mod, actually like yellowfin but with yellow dorsal) and the only Y.mods available are dyed. I can either wait (maybe years) for another opportunity to build a proper school (again), thus supporting this dastardly activity, or I ca...

Next time you bring them over keep me posted- I'll see what it'll take to get a couple shipped south. Temperatures sound perfect for a hilltop house.

Dyeing
The consensus is that dyed fish such as Y. modesta tend to have shorted lifespans due to either the process, stress or actual toxicity of the dyes used. But what actually kills the fish? Are they more suceptible to bacterial infections or something similar? Or is it that the people who buy these unf...
