I'd imagine that would really freak out visitors, because so far nobody who has come to my home has ever seen a dojo loach (or any kind of loach) before. They think they're eels! I'd love to see their reaction when only a head is sitting there on the sand.

I've read that dojo loaches like to dig even more than clowns - is that true? Mine don't dig in the gravel, but who can blame them? :)

Oh yeah, I didn't think of that. I guess when I get a bigger tank, I'll be taking the gravel out and sterilizing it to sell on ebay or something.

I had a huge infestation of pond snails until I got a pair of clown loaches. Those snails didn't last 2 days, literally! I was doubtful at first when the saleswoman at the pet store told me they'd take care of the problem. No doubts now. LOL And a wonderful side benefit was that I didn't know how mu...

Thank you very much! It sounds just like the kind of substrate that I'd need.

Re: pH and hardness

Since the LFS's here carry laoches it seems to be a non-issue but figured it's best to ask as I've never seen anyone post with water as hard as ours. I have rather high pH (around 8.0) and hard water. I have 4 clowns, 2 yoyos, 2 dojos, and 1 kuhli (Myer's). I've had the clowns over 2 years, and the...

Oh, that is really drool-worthy! Woooow. :P What size gravel is that? When I get a bigger tank I'd like to convert to live plants so I'm researching gravel size and lighting. I can't find anything in the local pet stores smaller than standard aquarium gravel, but I don't want to get sand either.

They sure are a unique and beautiful fish. I researched them quite a bit, a few months ago when I was considering buying one. I found lots of sites whose owners described the same thing, their BKG being rather peaceful, but I wouldn't risk it with my smaller tetras. I just like my dither fish too mu...

Graeme - Silversides are members of the Atherinidae family, like UK whitebait. I never thought of feding these to my loaches, because every time I try, the black ghost knifefish grabs them. I wish I could have a ghost knife, but I don't think I have the conditions in my tank to keep one happy and h...

They're little frozen fish that you find in the pet store (at least it's so in my area), that resemble minnows. Just looking at the package here...yes, they're labeled as Silversides with no other name mentioned, and there are no other ingredients such as preservatives. Just 100% dead fish. ;)

Feeding silversides

I just want to make sure the frozen silversides are okay for loaches. Every few days I've been giving the fish a small amount of chopped silverside. The first time I did, my new yoyos, who were always in hiding, decided I was an okay person after all and they've never hid from me since. Seems to be ...

I used a half dose of aquarium salt with a gradual temp increase to about 85, about a year ago when one of my new clowns had a bad case of ich. For my tank, it worked better than medication. A few days after the white spots disappeared, I did a 25% water change, then continued with my weekly water c...

My eyes are tearing up thinking about how fast my own kids are growing, and hoping my boys - the little terrors - turn out well. LOL

Both of my new kuhlis died. I won't try again with them, because they're so rare in my area. I probably shouldn't get any butterfly loaches either. I do have two strong currents, one with air bubbles, running in the upper back of my tank, but I don't want them to be uncomfortable with the temp...
