Take your water to the local fish store and get exact readouts for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph and KH if they have that test. They will test for free. I don't like to take "it is okay" for an answer - I have them give me the number and I write it down. Goldfish need a ph above 7. How big are yo...

I learned so much fishless cycling and am in the same boat as you. My husband gives me the grrr face when I ask him for help discerning the colours on the cards. And the worry of the fish swimming in toxic water isn't there either. I am fishless cycling (rather keeping a cycle alive) in a qt tank fo...

i wouldn't use fish to cycle - its stressful on the fish if they make it through but they could get sick (ich, flex, flukes etc) and cause problems. Why not fishless cycle or seed the new filter with some media from your old tank and feed it ammonia until its eating enough ammonia to support your ne...

Someone on another forum lost a dear fish when he added algaecide and it was algaefix. It was horrible. Ever since reading that thread I will never use it and I live with nasty black brush algae. I don't want to go through the process of blacking out the tank. I figure it helps with ammonia and eati...

Hey Diana - I meant to reply yesterday. Thanks so much for taking your time to read my post and replying. I added carbon right after reading your post. I have ammonia in my well water. I've had lengthy discussions about this on another forum. Conflicting advice - some say its not normal, some say th...

very sick weather loach
Hi guys. THis is a lengthy post but I hope you read it and help if you can. I was watching my 30G tank today when I saw one of my two weather loaches react very badly. Like a twisting spazzy swim. After months of watching them I'd never seen one act this way. On closer examination his/her eyes looke...
