Thanks, Jim! Yes, the Sewellias are from Dave here in Atlanta. His tank is a factory! I will keep watching the Chelas - they really don't seem bothered by the current, but I might try a less powerful powerhead and see how they react to that. I'm amazed at how unfazed the shrimp have been. I was sure...

Thanks so much! Plaalya, I think you're right that it needs more rocks. Looking at it in person, I didn't think so, but looking at it in photos, it does look a bit bare. I'm hoping someone who keeps Chelas can chime in, because I just can't tell if they're happy with the current or not. All the turb...

Finally set up a river tank :)

It's been a year since Jim Powers came to talk to our local fish club, but I said I'd do it and I did! Of course, I'm always second guessing myself, so I would appreciate some opinions on whether I've got it right. I got some secondhand powerheads from a friend, and they're mismatched. I can't decid...

aging kuhli

I think I read that the kuhli lifespan was about 10 years? One of my kuhlis was given to me about three years ago, and the guy who had him before me said he'd had him for at least seven years (he'd outlived the rest of the group). Even when I first got him, I always thought he looked old compared to...

I wondered if it was some sort of prespawning behavior too. I thought maybe the H smithi was waiting to pounce on the eggs. I was surprised at how bold he was too! They've all been so passive, even with each other. Yesterday I saw one fat corica, but there were two originally and I can't tell them a...

two schisturas and a homaloptera acting weird

Just wanted to tell about some strange loach behavior I saw last night: One of my Schistura coricas was crazily darting around the tank and diving into the sand. He would stay completely buried for a while with just his eyes sticking out, and then he'd shoot out and do it all again. Then a very fat ...

I'm sure I've posted more recent tank photos, but not on this thread, clearly. Here's a closeup that was taken around November of last year: http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3164/3040110986_775ab73307.jpg and here's a very recent but not so close-up photo - you can still see how much the java fern has...

Thanks, Jim and Emma! Emma, yes, feeding time is fascinating. Everything they do is so fast, I usually am watching the wrong one and just see some movement out of the corner of my eye. Jim, I've been studying the fins. Every one I look at seems to be at least touching, if not definite overlap. For n...

New Homaloptera smithi (maybe?) pictures

I grabbed nine of these at one of our local auctions, for less than $2 a fish. The nice thing about being known as the loach lady, is that people usually don't bid against me ;) I'm overkilling on the pictures, but I was curious which species you all think these are. Some of them are colored quite d...

Still waiting on the chelas - Frank's Aquarium got them in for me, but the weather has been too bad to ship. I'll order them soon though.

I am very much assimilated - they are so fascinating to watch. Even after everything I've read on here, I still expected them to act more or less like plecos - not at all. When I first put them in the tank, I thought they would kind of flutter to the bottom, but they shot immediately to the walls li...

burrowing Homaloptera?

I lucked into some H. smithi (I think), and now I know what you all are on about - hillstreams are amazing! I have nine of them, and they seem to be all different colors - not sure if I have multiple species or not, but I'll post pictures soon. Anyway, yesterday I caught one of them almost completel...

DI, you might also try looking for Estes Aqua Sand - it comes in black. I think that's what I have, and it's quite smooth and uniform.

Thank you! Of the two, I'm leaning towards pallidus. I don't remember seeing any red at all, but they're still small.

If I bought them, I'd feel compelled to buy the whole lot of them, and I don't have room :( I hate leaving interesting loaches at the store!
