Avatars were off by default, but I've turned them on now, and it looks like the old avatars were still in the system.

Yeah, it's something about this visual template that makes that icon not show up ...

This is a summary of the topic icons and what they mean.

Two general points
- Red icons are unread items, blue/grey are read
- A star on any thread means you have posted in it
