Hello yet again!! Clearly your math skills are better or at least more extensive than mine. :) I'll have to take your word for it!! If, as you indicate, my worst case would be about a 3 degree rise, give or take, I could live with that...or should I say the fish could. Recently I had a bout of ICH.....

Keith, yes I understand the situation isn't permanent. None the less it's interesting that it even works!! I think what I have in mind should work pretty well, although perhaps I will increase the in-tank pump driving the spray bar a little bit, maybe go a a 950gph for that, plus the 500gph from the...

Keith, all I can say if WOW!! I live in a mountainous area with a lot of streams and the flow rate through them is very high, especially compared to my tank, or any tank I've ever heard of....until yours!! Holy bat-crap, 10,000GPH in a 75G...my head is spinning at the thought.....Clearly the determi...

Hello Martin, a pleasure Sir! I've read your articles and was immediately intriqued. The fish I'll be keeping in the proposed tank are for the most part already living in my previously described 75G. There are 5 clowns, 6 kubotai's, 6 flying foxes, 4 pimlodella pictus cats, an 18 yr old clown pleco,...

New river tank-how much flow is too much??
As mentioned in other threads, on different topics, I'm planning a new 125G, 72x18x22 tank. I'll be using a river tank setup, but modified to my own tastes, based on a current loach tank I retrofitted for higher flow rates. In that 75G tank I mounted an AC500 HOB on one end and plumbed a Mag 500GPH ...

Thanks for the input folks. The surface area would be about 9 sq.ft. for a 125 gallon, 72"x18" tank. Yeah, heat loss/gain calculations could be tricky...lots of variables. I'm starting to lean more towards Tristan's idea of a good external circulation pump. That all but eliminates the heat transfer ...

G'Day Mr Jones. My river tank design will be essentially the same as Martin's, with some minor plumbing differences. I don't normally AC my house in the summer. It's not that I'm cheap, but I live in the woods and get lots of wonderful shade during the day, so the temperature in the area in question...

Thanks for the input. Yes, I know I could go with a closed loop and still get the unidirectional flow. Multiple power heads use much more space and cost more, but they are more energy effiecient. I was just trying to keep all the hardware in the tank for appearance purposes and the simplicity of a s...

Heat buildup from pumps
Folks, planning a new 125 gallon river tank setup. I'd like to use a high capacity pump, like a Mag Drive, 1800 GPH with the output split between a spraybar and the rest dumped into an Aqua Clear 500 power filter for an increased waterfall effect, instead of multiple power heads. A single pump is ch...

Boomer, I don't think that you can aerate too heavily. Once the water is saturated the rest will just gas out and these fish come from heavily aerated waters in nature, so if anything I would expect them to enjoy the "breath of fresh air". I am having good luck with the treatment plan I outlined abo...

I've been treating a 75 gallon loach/catfish tank with Ich for about 10 days. I started with heat and Quick Cure and then switched over to Rid-Ich and salt two days ago. The spots are gone and all the fish seem to be fine despite the 10 day chemical bath, high temps, 85-87 degrees, and salt. I'm aer...

Shari, checked out the latest link pertaining to spawning. FYI, my PH runs about 7.8 with only moderate hardness. I'm on a well and I don't try to adjust water parameters, just keep it clean. My fish get it the same way I do, straight out of the ground. No softeners, no filtration, no nothing. Fortu...

These guys are about 8- 10 years old, but not that big, perhaps 4 inches SL. They probably should be bigger by now, but until recently they lived in a 38 gallon tank, with my eupterus and a pictus cat, so maybe they're stunted. I see some BIG ones in other folks tanks, so mine are probably runts due...
