Re: My six Clown Loaches have reached 22 years of age.

That's a very long time for any fish in captivity, well done!

Re: Clown Loach Laying Eggs

One thing that I find very interesting from all of this, is how small the egg laying female was. (8-10 cm)

Re: I am new and messed up

People have said they reach 15" (though how they know this they didn't say). If that is really true I would suspect that a larger tank than 6' x 2' x 2' is needed for Clown Loaches to reach their maximum size. I have seen clown loaches in captivity that were 14-15", the LFS that had them in one of ...

Re: Farm Bred Clowns in FL

I'm sure that they do some volume, just not with CL's. A commercial farm like that does not base all of their livelihood on a single species of fish. Think about it. You also have to remember that not everyone seeks the life of a millionaire, for some folks just livin' the dream is good enough. The ...

Re: Farm Bred Clowns in FL

I kinda doubt it, Mike. If you look at their various pics on their website, and videos posted on youtube, they are a very small outfit, a mere puddle in a large ocean of commercial farms in S. Florida. They don\t even have a Min Order Amount, which is pretty much unheard of in the wholesale fish biz...

Re: Clown Loach Laying Eggs

Yes, absolutely, I just didn't want the OP getting their hopes up and expecting fry.

Re: Farm Bred Clowns in FL

Thanks, I know of Bioaquatix, but they are really small time breeders that for the most part can only stock hobbyists. Right now, their entire stock for CL's is less than 200 pieces. That, and their prices pretty much remove them from supplying the vast majority of retail outlets that can purchase s...

Re: Farm Bred Clowns in FL

Old thread, just thought I would bump it up and see if anyone is still seeing farm raised clown loaches in their area? These were the first and last that I saw in Canada, but I did hear of a possible supplier shipping some to a vendor in Winnipeg recently.

Re: Clown Loach Laying Eggs

Very cool indeed! Unfortunately it takes more than a gravid female dropping eggs to produce a successful spawn. The eggs appear to have already fungused over, and without fertilization from a sperm laden male nothing is going to come of this. While clown loaches have been successfully bred in captiv...

Some of their fish are indeed Florida produced, they purchase from local farms, but from what I've seen a large whack of them are imported from Asia. (and hormoned to maximize color at an early age, which the owner freely admitted to me) I've seen hormoned fish from the other supplier as well. Howev...

Matthew - for the most part that supplier is simply a transhipper of Asian bred fish. (and yes, many are hormoned fish, especially the African cichids) I spoke to the owner last year about his "juiced" fish, and I've spoke to Mark (the head fish dept manager in Calgary) and it appears as long as the...

I should probably watch my P&Q's as I am a supplier for Petland, but let's just say that I think it's fair to state that the vast majority of Petland shoppers won't even understand what the F1 designation stands for.

Farm Bred Clowns in FL

One of our chain stores here just got some some of these in from Florida last week. I had read that a couple of farms in Florida were attempting to breed clown loaches (with the use of hormones) and it appears that at least one of them is already supplying fry to the trade. At best the clowns in the...
