I can answer one of your questions: that of plants. I can wholeheartedly recommend Anubias, any species. I have been keeping fish for about 2 years and many plants have come and gone (mostly in the form of a pulpy mess); Anubias nana however have soldiered on. They grow slowly but they WILL survive ...
