Do loaches need a companion?

My 11-year-old Dojo Loach just died, leaving it's companion, a smaller Dojo, alone. Is it very important that I get another one? I don't have an extra tank and the energy for the quarantine, etc. that is needed. In the past I've just acclimated the fish to the water slowly by changing out the water ...
