Re: Vaillantella maassi Mystery

The tanks are all the way across the (large) room from each other! So it it a complete mystery! We have not had good luck in the river tank with any of the smaller hillstreams or any fry surviving. I think we have now discovered why! And of course no additional sightings after the other night....

Re: Lone Rostrata in with Kubs

We call our LFS "The Ich Store" so even if we could justify going in there during COVID, we won't. We have had pretty good luck with WetSpot, but I sure wish we could pick out Striata. Have gotten a few with CRAZY stripes :) I want to see your planted tank. Do you have photos? Are you on the Planted...

Vaillantella maassi Mystery

So about 10 years ago we got a Vaillantella maassi and added it to our 120 gallon tank. Nice sand substrate, good water flow, loads of hiding spaces. It was lovely, but after about 3 days we never saw it again. We kept thinking maybe it was still there, we know they need to hide, etc. Even as the ye...

Welcome to the Loach Forum!

I can't help you, unfortunately, beyond what the photos in the photo gallery on the main site can show you. They are cute though!

Re: Lone Rostrata in with Kubs

Hi Nancy! I laughed when you mentioned shy Striata and Sids! Our Sids are the least shy of any of our loaches, and they school right along with the Striata and Kubs and Rostrata. And when there are any people around, they are all shameless beggars! Once upon a time we had a Vaillantella massi in the...

Re: Lone Rostrata in with Kubs

I am glad you are still here! The Rostrata is a hoot -- really gives us THE LOOK when we are sitting on the sofa when we "should be" feeding it! It certainly seems to be thriving in the tank, and doesn't seem to be a bully, either. And at a lovely 8 o F and windy out, we won't be thinking of rehomin...

Re: Hillsteam tank refurb

Well, the 50 long is also just 48 inches, so doesn't really help with flow. We don't need to make any decisions in any hurry, but January in my climate is a good time to plan gardens and fish tanks :D

Re: Lone Rostrata in with Kubs

Well, as far as we can tell it is happy? But how can you really tell with fish :) It is schooling with the others (aka begging for food with any sign of human movement!)

Lone Rostrata in with Kubs

We have a lone Rostrata that was mis-identified as a Kub as a juvenile. It has now outgrown (slightly) the largest Kub. It schools with the Kubs (and striata) but wisdom on this site is that they need a school of their own. Our tank is only 120 US gallons, so if it needs a school of more rostrata, I...

Hillsteam tank refurb

Hello All! Has been a long time... Our current hillstream tank is a standard 55 gallon (US) tank. We are taking a hard look at it and redoing it. This summer we will need to take down the tank to paint the wall behind it, and we started with discussions about a new stand and at what height it should...

Hi. I am myself just popping back after a few years away. It makes me so sad that many of the old timers have moved to FaceBook.

Re: Dithers for Hillstream tank?

Thank you! WE had tried danio kyathits (which we have an over abundance of -- anyone want some?), and they hide in the rocks at the bottom :) We do have a log in the middle but not enough eddy. I wonder if giant danios might like it more, but they are big fish for a 55 g We had a couple Vietnamese W...

Re: Dithers for Hillstream tank?

Oops, sorry! It is a 55 gal. (US), 48" long. At one point I knew the max gallons/hour, but I can't seem to recall or find it written down. On the manifold we have 2 Aquaclear 110s, and a Marineland that is less powerful, but I can't see which one it is. One FLuval and one Rena filter, also set up as...

Dithers for Hillstream tank?

Hi guys, We've not been hanging out here much lately, but still enjoying our loaches :) And we pop in to browse on occasion. We would love some advise on dithers for our hillstream tank. Nothing we have tried so far has been able to hold up to the current. Would love to hear what you experts have! T...
