Agreed. I've had several groups of sids...all with otos and never a problem. I've never had them get obnoxious with any fish and I've kept mostly peaceful schoolers with them, including Rasbora maculata.

Small update:

One of the shrimp died...was just laying out dead, but the betta didnt feed on it at all.

The other 3 came out to feed normally.

No seriously, these were 'ghost shrimp.' people use them as feeders here.

Are you thinking of some of the fancier shrimp we were discussing?

Not only that, I came home tonite and dont see any of the 4. I hope they are just hiding under the bogwood. I didnt want to move it, and I'm sure my betta ...

So I made an impulse purchase today....4 ghost shrimps (they were 40 cents each on sale). They're about 3/4 inch long.

They're now acclimated to the tank and out foraging. The betta gave them scant notice.

Fingers crossed....it would be nice to have some colorful ones in there someday.

Lot of naysayers for practical reasons :D , but it is my dream tank. Not nearly so blocky as the rect. 75. For a show tank, it fits into alot of rooms better...more like furniture.

A 90 bow is beautiful too, but since I am always reaching in messing with the plants, it's too deep.

I'm surprised to ...

I have a 5.5 gal heated betta tank set up and want to add an otto, but wasnt sure if I should make it 2 instead.
Otto's prefer large groups, and a healthy 5.5g wouldn't likely produce enough algae to keep them well fed. I wouldn't recommend it. The trouble with new ottos is that they don't ...

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know how you feel somewhat.

In the big windstorm a few yrs ago, I didnt have power for 8 days and lost all 4 tanks of fish. It was so sad emptying those tanks.

In my largest tanks, I have used 2 lower wattage heaters, with the hope that if one went haywire like yours ...

The shrimp sound cool. How many for a 5.5 gal tank?

Do they eat algae?

Well those snails are pretty attractive, thanks. I'll have to see if they're available around here.

Can they eat the algae off of even fine-leaved plants?

Any other invertebrate suggestions?

kuhlis in a 5.5 gal?

So it's sounding like my batta might not accept other fish in his tank, since he is establishing it as his territory.

Are kuhlis too active for a 5.5 planted tank? And it's not heavily planted...that will take awhile, but it does have a small piece of bog wood and several plants.

I think I'll also ...

Oh great info...and bad news.

It makes total sense about the territoriality tho.

I also considered a few kuhlis but thought they might be too active in such a small space.

Hmm. Maybe people have other suggestions for small, tough tankmates?

Gorgeous Martin.

Since I was last involved in fish and the forums, digital cameras have really made a HUGE difference in contributing to posting! Esp. for identifying fish, but also for showing off tanks (& diagnosing diseases too I imagine).

tankmates for betta?

Hi. I posted about cycling the tank with my betta, but once it is cycled, I'd like to add a few other fish.

I'm leaning towards 5-7 pygmy cories or 3 panda cories. And an otto or 2.

Any other suggestions? Are there any mid-level fish that a betta would get along with/not harass him?

I'm open to ...

Have ottos gotten more fragile? I dont think I ever lost any when I bought them. I'm in a soft water area, if that makes any difference.

And there's nuthin' cuter than fat ottos! I kept some in every tank.

I have a question:

I forget, are they happier in pairs or groups or is a single one ok? I ...
