Re: Moving, chance to do some upgrades?
If you have the room and like to DIY, you could always go with a sump for a filter. The benefit of easy cleaning and massive filter capacity. It's also a plus in a loach tank as they tend to be great at adding oxygen to the water.

Re: Holy Nirtates
20 isn't horrible, just not ideal. Put in the swords, especially if you have or can get one of the big mother plants. I would consider potting it (if the aesthetic doesn't bother you) so you can rescue it easily if it becomes loach food. If you plant it, I'd put some rocks around the base until it's...

Have you checked the expiration date on the test kit? You can google how to read the code on the bottle to tell the expiration date.

That's what I thought, but wanted confirmation since I really don't want to lose my loaches in the transfer.

Temporary Move/Housing
I am having new floors installed in my house which necessitates dismantling the current 55 gal aquarium. I am also taking this opportunity to upgrade to a significantly large tank which will take me a few weeks to procure and set up. In the meantime, I plan on temporarily housing my loaches in a 40g...

Peppered, panda, and dwarf. The loaches like them better though.

They may not be in the print catalog, but they are still offered online.

Re: How to know when my clowns need a larger tank?
Have you considered upgrading to a 75 gallon tank? It's not a lot of extra water, but around a 30% increase of aquarium floor space, which is what loaches and other bottom dwellers really like anyway.

Re: New to Loach Keeping
Is there any reason you cannot keep the 2 foot set up and just move the cichlids ? If the loaches are already acclimated to the water, and since it is an established tank, I would keep them in the 2' and not move them back and forth. As long as there is at least one hidey hole in the tank, mine have...

Slowly dying Clown Loaches
Over the last few weeks I have lost 3 clowns. The first two I thought had gotten into a fight and couldn't heal. It's a fairly quick timed death after they look like the below picture. https://picasaweb.google.com/115020423284480409111/August212011#5643332088876320242 https://picasaweb.google.com/11...

Battle Weary Loach
Hi all, I've had the same 5 clowns for at least 8 years now. Over the weekend there was a fight between two of the loaches. I think it was over a favorite hiding spot as the one that usually hid there has been replaced. On the plus side, they both seem to be healing well although one got significant...

Re: how to get loaches out
I would be really tempted to transfer them to the new tank in the log, but not actually place it on the bottom. If you do it when the lights are out, and if you can leave it propped up somehow, I bet they would all move out shortly. My loaches don't really like hiding places up high in the tank and ...

If you are willing to DIY something, google drylock backgrounds or drylock and aquarium for some nifty ideas. I know drylock is an american prdouct, but I'm sure some form of masonry sealer is sold pretty much everywhere.

Re: diatom filter
I have one and want to curse most times when I set it up. That being said, I would never do without it for big messy tank re-arranges (when you stir up crap), initial tank set up, and ich outbreaks. It can clear water in a ridiculous amount of time, but you have to protect the inlet well as they are...
