Clowns less active

My clowns are less active than usual for 2 days now, eating well and out about, but just pilling on top of each other at the front, instead of their boisterous behaviour. Tank has been stable for 2 years, no lights on about from moonstrip. I think their breathing is a little faster, so I added more ...

I'm glad she is looking better. I had a platy who got wedged in a small hole on a bridge ornament. I broke the ornament and she had the same white band around her and had damaged her dorsal fin trying to move. She made a full recovery, the white band took a while to go and get colour back. Poo colle...

My LFS gave me a 1" clown when I had 5 other clowns around 2.5". He was in an order with all other at 2"+. LFS was worried as well at his tiny size. He didn't grow very much to start with with 3 meals a day, always with the others, but 3 years later he is bigger than 2 of the original 5, has beautif...

Clowns do like bigger groups but I had one that wouldn't settle in a group, always faded and fighting with bigger ones. I removed him and his colour returned on his own and appeared to thrive for a while. I have since returned him to the group, after giving them their chance to work out who is alpha...

If your clowns are around 2", as most LFS only have small ones, a group of 4 or 5 would be better, as long as you can upgrade within a year or so. They do get very big, but it takes years. I did the same, came home with a couple of clowns because of all the snails from the plants. My 2 are now a big...

Clowns prefer dim light, so your tank lights may just be too much. Try leaving them off for a few days and see if the clowns come out to play during the day. How many are in the group?

Don't panic and enjoy your new clowns!! As soon as you can, get a 4' tank, around 50/75g. 4' wide gives them room to grow for a few years, upgrading to 100g/6' wide tank eventually. When you have a bigger tank, I would reccomend making the group at least 5 as they are very sociable and outgoing. You...

Update on my clowns

The new bigger 4 have really settled in over the last 6 weeks. I have been able to measure them, and one is 5", 2 x 4" and the 4th is shorter around 3.5" but very chunky, so maybe a growth spurt soon. They ate algae wafer/tablet food very quickly, getting up during the day to eat with my clowns. The...

Nocturnal ?

I still can't work out if my new 4 clowns around 4.5" are classed as nocturnal or just prefer an unlit tank. They have settled in well, eating, good colour. They come out when the tank is lit if they hear the clicking of algae wafers from my younger ones, grab some, stay around for 30 mins and then ...

Beastie's holiday

Beastie is my alpha clown loach, who appears to prefer life without clowns. After 2 weeks holiday with the angels, he was missing last night and this morning. He is very outgoing and busy all day , so something had to be wrong. He was stuck inside an ornament, so he was taken to kitchen to slowly cu...

Alpha clown loach (loner)

My alpha clown loach, young and about 3.5" now, may just be one who likes being on his own. 2 years ago when I got my first 2 clowns because of many snails (I didn't know anything then), I noticed they fought a lot, even though they were tiny. I looked up info on them, and added a third quickly. He ...

I have 4 amano shrimp with 10 young clowns, from 2" to 3.5". They are fine, actively try to get a piece of algae wafer when they go in. The shrimp are now 2" with long antennae, shed frequently and appear fine, often all together eating algae on a cantral tree trunk ornament which I never clean to e...

Single clowns

When I first got 2 clowns , knowing mothing much about them, apart from "they eat snails", nearly 3 years ago. I have learnt lots more since!! The first 2 fought a lot, so i added a third. Beastie, one of the first 2, became Alpha and took them both on. After mouth damage, I removed him to 65g, plat...

I'm looking into moonlights for them. The 4 biggest of my 10 have overmight become nocturnal, up with the new ones and asleep all day. The tank looked so different!!! It iis an opportunity to feed the 5 tiny ones without the others taking their food, but so unexpected. I thought i had a couple more ...
