Re: my hillstream viv journal

Thanks!

The pumps add up to about 20,000 liter/hour (and a total amount of 800 liters), but that is of course nominal capacity. Compared to almost all fish tanks the flow is enormous, compared to nature it is only mild.

Re: my hillstream viv journal

This week I tried to get some animal portraits as well. I used the same landscape camera and a studio flash. Bit of weird toolbox for making images of a viv, but the results are quite interesting. Dirt, wet windows and reflections are all very well visible. The details the macro lens uncover are fas...

Re: my hillstream viv journal

After way too long another update! No animal pics this time, but mainly the planted scenery. I used the camera I normally use for landscape photography, giving a shallow depth of field in the tank. For starters an overview of the tank as it is now (and yes, I have to do some gardening...) http://www...

Re: New eel

It is a Mastacembalus sp., not a knife fish (unless I don't know the English name conventions). I can't tell you the specific species though.

Re: my hillstream viv journal

Last week I visited an aquatic plant dealer and bought some plants. Most of it seems to do nicely. I am especially happy with the Lagenandra thwaitesii (green) and L. meeboldii (red). Here some pics of the new ones, of course with what was already there: http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/...

Re: my hillstream viv journal

Thank you both! The initial idea was born around December 2007. Q1&2 2008 I built a first hill stream vivarium (somewhat smaller at 150x75cm; about the same height). The idea worked, but I learned quite a few things that should be done better. So September 2009 I started this new tank by preparing t...

Re: my hillstream viv journal

I took some more froggie pics last week. They tend to hide in dark places, so I had to use flash a couple of times. Nevertheless a nice addition to the larger update, I hope. http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/195.jpg http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/196.jpg http:...

Re: my hillstream viv journal

hi all, Thanks for the nice words! You encourage me to show another series of photos, even if there is nothing 'fishy' in it... :D http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/T20110507-021.jpg http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/T20110507-022.jpg http://www.fotografiewimvanve...

Some inhabitants: The newly introduced Rasbora kalochroma - very fast and there for hard to capture: http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/T20110507-001.jpg http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/T20110507-006.jpg http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/T201105...

Re: my hillstream viv journal

Not much loach news here, but you might find this update of interest... Since last November I have been on a kind of forum leave. Probably posted to much and needed some rehab ;-) Nevertheless, apologies and all that and an update! The tank is doing fine. Technically all works as planned, although I...

Nothing special to tell, apart from the arrival of a beautiful new inhabitant! Since a couple of weeks I have 3.3 Nomoramphus liemi, a half beak fish from the fast waters of Sulawesi. http://www.fotografiewimvanvelzen.nl/vivaria/images/T20101017_010.jpg Males are evidently smaller and like to swim j...

hi Glenny,

excellent pictures! I guess you visit Rotterdam (Blijdorp) and Arhem (Burger's Zoo) as well?
It is been too long that we went to Amsterdam.

hi Ingo,

Thanks for the extra information. Good to know that this Microrasbora likes the current. I am thinking of a smaller hillstream tank (that is, smaller than my hillstream paludarium) for breeding Gastromyzons or Sewellias.
It is nice to have a by-fish that probably no problem for the young.

hi Ingo,

Great fish and video! Any news on the eggs / fry? And what kind of small fish do you have as company?

TIA, Wim
