Re: Live plants with loaches

My dojos don't dig. They hide beneath the huge Anubias I have in their tank. They use the dense leaves for shelter. I don't have sand in my tank with the dojos. Instead, I have smooth, rounded pea gravel, and they don't dig in that, but could, because it's still loose enough and small enough. And it...

Re: Loach newbie - have I scared them?

It's normal for dojos to bury themselves in sand. Even in gravel, if it's small enough and smooth and round with no sharp edges. I've had dojos bury in gravel. They tend to be skittish. Mine skedaddle at the least movement and go hid under the huge Anubias. They come out to eat, and sometimes rest o...

Re: Determining the Sex of my Dojo?

I believe females are fatter than males, or maybe just fuller-bodied.

Re: How quickly do dojo/weather loaches grow?

Right now, I have a 65-gallon for my three dojos, which are roughly three-to-four inches long. They're in a community tank with other peaceful fish and some Amano shrimp and snails. Previously, they were in my 20-gallon tall when they were smaller. I knew they would need more space to swim in, so tr...

Re: My Weather Loaches had babies!!!!

There's a very huge risk, if these are baby dojos, that they could get eaten by the other tank inhabitants. You should move them at once to a separate fry tank to let them grow out (supply fry food for them, which you can get at your LFS, and keep the tank clean). If they turn out to not be dojos, b...

Re: dojo/weather loach question

I have successfully kept my dojos in a tank with smooth, rounded pea gravel. I've only had one that buried itself completely in the gravel. None of my other dojos dig. I have live plants, and they leave them alone, except to nestle under the broad Anubias leaves for shelter. I have three dojos in a ...

Re: (Suspected) weather loach arrived in my pond without ever being purchased or added

If it does turn out to be a dojo, I hope you will keep the cute little thing and let it thrive in your pond. If the koi are large, they might eat it. If it has places to hide, like rocky outcroppings or plants, it could survive peacefully for several years, assuming it gets some of the food when you...

Re: Feeding Dojos Veg

To be safe, chop up the peas in a grinder and just give them small chunks. They should be able to handle that.

Re: dojo/weather loach question

Just thought I would add: I have a planted tank, and my dojos don't bother the plants. Mine don't dig, but I have rounded pea gravel for a substrate instead of sand. If I had sand, they might dig. I had one awhile back that would bury itself in the gravel, diving head first and completely submerging...

Re: dojo/weather loach question

Dojos (weather loaches) prefer company of their own kind, either golden or regular. At least three, or if your tank is large enough, up to five or six. In a 125-gallon, that should be fine. They do prefer cooler temps, in the low 70s. They're peaceful community fish, and cute as can be. Not sure if ...

Re: Substrate advice

Instead of sand, I have small, smooth, rounded pea gravel with no sharp edges on it. My dojos are fine with that. Plants also grow well in it, with the help of low-level ferts. I have low-light plants such as Anubias, Java ferns, Amazon Swords and Crypts. They are growing prolifically in both of my ...

Re: Experience with dojos/weather loaches in outside pond

I always wonder, when I hear lines like, "Our supplier doesn't have them", etc., etc., if it's really just an excuse because they don't want to go to the trouble of accommodating your request. There's usually a way to get it done, if they really wanted to. I tend to think, laziness and/or indifferen...

Re: Experience with dojos/weather loaches in outside pond

Dojos are notorious escape artists. They will surely get out of the pond. They can live for awhile outside of water, due to storing oxygen inside their bodies. As long as they don't dry out. But they can't stay out indefinitely. Even in the open pond water, they can fall victim to predators, such as...
