Re: What to do About the Clowns

As long as the algae wafers sit around on the bottom a while they'll get enough nibbles. Next time you do bloodworms drop in other foods at the same time and see if they take a bite of them while madly dashing around for the worms.

Re: Looking for the Right Kind of Plant

Amazonian frogbit is another floating plant that grows fairly quickly (though not as fast as duckweed, nothing grows faster than that damn stuff). I can also vouch for java fern, some crypts and hygro. As far as nitrates go my best advice is to look at making your water changes easier with long hose...

Probably this. If you add a cave though you will probably need to add 2 as the dominant one will take up residence in the one he wants.

Re: New tank. Loach heaven!

why get rid of tannins. they give a wild touch to any aquaria. I would love tannins. i put wood in my tank but hardly any tannins  Well plants don't really seem to like most of the light being absorbed before it gets to them :) All a matter of personal preference but me and the fish seem to l...

Re: New tank. Loach heaven!

On another note. 1.5L of very expensive Purigen can barely keep up with the tannins so if you ever set up a scape like this be prepared for some hefty Purigen rejuvination (more than an entire bottle of bleach required!).

Re: New tank. Loach heaven!

Sort of related question... I have a tiny yoyo loach. I bought a bunch around his size a couple of months ago when I set up the tankin post #1 (they have all since grown) and I assumed this guy had died as I did not see him for MONTHS but now he is out and comes to your hand for food and everything ...

Re: New tank. Loach heaven!

that looks great! is that a big gourami you have? What are those floating plants? Oh, and I love the raspora hets, such pretty fish (I have some of these in the kitchen kuhli tank and they are so elegant!) The tank looks wonderful.... how did the "big mamma" adjust to that lovely hollow log? truly ...

Re: Hillstream loaches in Pond

You could easily find out. you just need to find one location they live naturally and then look up the temperature history on the web. Just assume that if your homes temperature history is the same it'll be pretty good. 3C sounds low though! I know goldfish can survive that but dang they be tough! B...

Re: Plants to keep with my loaches???

i'd recommend just getting a variety of plants and seeing what survives. Loaches (esp clowns) do destroy some plants but your tank conditions rule a lot of other types out as well! Cant go wrong with java ferns though, tough as nails.

Re: How to know when my clowns need a larger tank?

Your going to get a mix of answers. im going to give an ambiguous one ;) If you can't keep your nitrates under control comfortably you need to upsize. If you can't afford to upsize just adjust your maintenance so the nitrates are lower and try and make the tank as nice as possible for them. I kept a...

Re: Question on my loaches second opinion needed!!!!!!

People state you need a 6x2 for clown loaches but remember you won't need that for 5+ years! They will live just fine in a 4x2 for a long time and you will know when they are too big for it.

Re: New tank. Loach heaven!

It'd have to be a big ass pot as originally the hollow logs I had were nearly 5ft long. I had to cut them in half for the scape (yep I have spare hollow logs!). I soaked them in hot water in the bath for over a week but obviously I should have done it longer. On another note, has anyone ever had bul...

Re: New tank. Loach heaven!

Update. Went away for the weekend and left the mother in law to feed my fish and now the old loaches are 'greying out' and hardly coming out at all. Incredibly skittish and dull colour but don't look ill. The 3 new small clowns dont care and are brightly coloured and coming out to scrounge for food....
