Re: A planted tank without snails is this possible???
I would love to put real plants in the tank I am planning for kuhli loaches, but whenever I have tried to have a planted tank no matter how much I wash the plants beforehand the tank always ends up completely covered in snails!! I wonder how others manage it or whether it is possible at all??? I kn...

Re: bent spine
I have a five gallon tank with two zebra danios. After returning from a trip, I noticed that one of the danios had a bent spine which has gotten slightly worse in the past weeks. He also looks very skinny and swims at the top of the tank and appears to be struggling to move. I know I should have st...

What sort of dose would you recommend? After all, these are human strength medication intended for oral consumption.Ardillakilla wrote:You need to use a real antibiotic. TMP sulfa or kanamycin.
For the record, anything that contains an antibiotic is an equally real antibiotic, regardless of the intended use.

Don't think I'll try Ebay - its good for non-living things but not live beings! So what makes you think that some random person who uses eBay isn't going to give it a better home than some random person who walks into your LFS? After all, an LFS did sell the fish to you when you knew nothing about ...

Re: Tank Mates for Banded Tiger Loach?
Brad, before thinking about any more species of loach, why don't you investigate what the longest tank you can have is? As I mentioned, even the 100 litre is too small for the yoyo, unless it is 4 ft long. As for finding a new home for the helodes , have you tried aquarist-classifieds? Or on here? O...

Re: I want shrimp!!!!!
If the seller is reliable, knows how to post animals and takes all the necessary precautions, then I consider for there to be little risk involved in buying online. It is always best to quarantine everything, before adding it to your tanks, for 4-6 weeks. I assume it's starting to get cold in US? I ...

Water parameters? Maintenance schedule? Tank mates?
I would try eSHa 2000 to treat it, and would try to find what caused the problem to prevent it coming back.

Re: Tank Mates for Banded Tiger Loach?
S. helodes (banded tiger loaches) are not a species which is *really* suitable for the average home aquaria because they are extremely active compared to other large fish, so you'd be looking at at least a 6 ft tank for the species in the long term. As with many other loaches, this is a social spec...

Re: Plankton for loaches
The photo of the food you liked to looks more like small crustaceans than plankton, especially since plankton is small enough that individual bits should not be visible to the naked eye. I can't see a problem with feeding crustaceans to loaches as part of a balanced diet if the food is washed and pr...

Re: confessions and aspirations of a lazy fishkeeper
For those of you that have done this, how dumb is it to think that I can remove the gravel and add the sand with the fish still in the tank? The rainbowfish seem to get really stressed out easily, and I am thinking this would be less stressful than netting them and putting them in a bucket, but I'm...

Re: dropsy
The symptoms you describe are often caused by bacterial infections… it may be a good idea to do a short course with a generic anti-microbial. For example, I would consider a half-dose course of eSHa 2000 as it covers a wide range of gram positive and gram negative bacteria, and fungus, but does not ...

Kittykat, it's a small staying Echinodorus in the rekord 60 tank, with enough light it will have red leaves. I actually meant the one to the left of it, the stem plants with teardrop leaves, didn't even see the sword! I've had no cross breed from danio margaritatus and erythromicron, i've had sever...

Whichever one suits the purpose best Java moss is a reliable one, but most of the others grow fine for me too.

Re: dropsy
Dropsy is usually a catch-all term to describe generic poor water quality and a certain set of symptoms. Until someone who has more loach-specific knowledge comes along, it's probably a good idea to do some water changes with temperature matched and dechlorinated water, say 30-50%. Can you post your...

Re: Plankton for loaches
Are you talking about tiny free-swimming plants of freshwater origin? If yes, then yes. If you're talking about marine plankton, then probably not because many loaches are sensitive to salt. If you're talking about bacteria and archaea, then probably not as well, although I'm not sure if these could...
