Re: Advice

Yes, i agree. We purchased through live Aquaria and our discus come from Discus Hans. None of the pet stores within an hour and half drive have really good stock of any fish. We buy plants locally though. We did purchase a setup aquarium for the tank, and got a surprise. It had a L134 leopard frog p...

Re: Advice

I wanted to thank everyone for their responses and give an update. Well we no longer have the 150 acrylic tank. We took the opportunity to upgrade. We purchased another 220 gallon tank and it is setup and running happily. The discus are moved to a 220 gallon tank that we already had and we added 12 ...

Re: Advice

Really. Our cherry shrimp breed like crazy. We are currently growing them out in a planted 36 bowfront. I would say we have at least 15 berried as we speak and a conservative estimate of 200-300 shrimp and we have only been raising them for about 4 months. of course you can probably take that times ...

Re: Advice

My goodness. $800 i felt bad for paying $100 for a coral for my reef tank. I wonder if i could get a bulk discount if I bought 6. LOL We would love some crystal reds in the tank, but are concerned with them being an expensive snack for the discus. We Could always throw some of our larger cherry reds...

Re: Advice

Yes, i agree that 30% does seem excessive, normally. However, we feed heavy on the beefheart 5 times a day for the discus and angels. And we believe the culprit with the deaths was the temperature. We are still proceeding with our plan and emptying the fish out the the 150 temporarily and removing t...

Re: Advice

planning on more kubs in such a big tank? We have learned our lesson on adding several hundred dollars worth of fish to a tank. The first 10 will be sort of an experiment to see if they live. If no problems we are planning 25 or so. I think we can handle that many. We will also have 16 discus in th...

Re: Advice

We were thinking of running 160 leds over the 220 with all set on dimmers. The count would probably be 64 6500K, 60 Royal Blues, 30 4500K, 6 reds. I am still up in the air about adding any violet. I don't see a reason too. Have you all not had good luck with LED's?

Re: Advice

With the 150 gallon we have now we are running 40 leds over it and the plants absolutely love it. We have a mix of 3 watt at 6500K, royal blues, 4 reds and 4500K. We are running 60 degree optics on the 6500 and 4500 leds. We are getting excellent growth. and flowering as well. We would call it heavi...

Re: Advice

Sorry, been busy the last few days re-doing plumbing and cleaning the tank. Picked up some very nice large pieces of driftwood. The mineralized topsoil looked like a great idea and read tons on it. However, due to time constraints and the colder temps, We would never get it to dry out. We decided to...

Re: Advice

Sounds good, we are going to steer clear of the blasting media. I had not seen the media in person, so was not sure how jagged it was. We will look into the swimming pool sand. We are also looking for some aquascaping ideas. In the tank we will have a total of 16 Discus. We were going with a large p...

Re: Advice

Yes I live in the US in the midwest. We looked at the kubotai. We really like them We are going to try and find a place online that sells them It will be after we get this tank going and cycled. We are liking the mineralized top soil. Does anyone have any experience with the "Black Beauty" blasting ...

Re: Advice

Well, we looked at the discus last night and they are beautiful. He is holding them for a month or two while we get tanks in order. He keeps them at 84 F. I think we are going to acclimate them to 82 still though. From research and the discussion here about cowns, I think we are going to steer clear...

Re: Advice

Ok change of plans. We have decided to ditch the 150 and picked up a drilled 220. This will become our new discus tank. We also are picking up 12-more 7-8"discus. The owner is holding the discus until our tank is good and cycled. Our plan right now is to plumb the tank to our basement and have a 100...
