Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Well that time frame may fit. They were brought home on the 14th of Nov. He seemed to be doing very well and first so I'm left scratching my head. I'm going to try tempting him with some fresh blanched greens to mix it up a bit. Aside from his slight appearance, he is acting otherwise naturally. Ini...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Quick question... I have a "skinny" looking loach. It's the smaller of the two Beautifortia. Everything else in the tank is spot on. Water quality is good and all other fish are healthy including his counterparts. I have yet to see either if the two feeding as I think they are doing it after lights ...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

The kids have come home... Finally! I have purchased my first three specimens and they seem to be loving the new digs. After letting the tank mature and propigating some great growth, I decided it was time. Choices were everything I could find locally which netted me two Beaufortia kweichowensis (I'...

The tank in place as a divider between the couch and desk in the "Man Cave" http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b521/gmartenson/55gl%20Hillstream/file_zps6a615ac8.jpg Yep... gettin' dirty! Dirt base capped in clay and a gravel cap on the "upstream" half to come. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Well it's been a while and the tank is in place and I've just introduced my "starter fish" tonight. After much frustration with one of the two pieces of driftwood I was going to place in the tank, the final scene is set with just one... stupid floating wood. With out further ado... Some pictures... ...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Oh, and an addition question for the experts out there. I am NOT going to max the keeping capacity of the tank, so will oxygenation be an issue with the two existing powerheads on the manifold ( Odyssea 350 X2) and a Magnum 330 canister running downstream from one end to the other? I know that the c...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Oh ya, omission on my part. Jim, is it your experience that these guys like group numbers in a community setting or do they prefer pairs if I can get them sexed? Well, the pumps have arrived, I'm gluing up the manifold today, the second hand stand is rehabilitated and the tank is ready to go. Preppi...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Ouch on the broken back! I should have a problem there with my setup I think. It will be wide open water on front of the powerheads as the end of the tank. The intakes will also be enclosed in sponge filters... under gravel manifold is the plan. I was thinking that I would put a sand patch somewhere...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

I will definitely do so as soon as I can get the Mac to do it. The pics just don't want to post right. I was thinking of doing a 1/2 to 3/4 inch river pebble aggregate as the base and fill in with montmorillonite clay but it clouded my planted tank and it won't settle enough to make it satisfactoril...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

OK, Well thanks to all who have replied! So far, I have all the pieces in place to start the build out of the tank... pumps, gravel, driftwood, pvc for the manifold and the tank set up out on the deck culturing algae rock are all a go! I'll be picking out a centerpiece driftwood next week ( hopefull...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Hello and thanks for the reply, I actually live near one of the cleaner rivers outside the Chicago, IL area. Reason being that it has been the site of a recent "Superfund" cleanup by our EPA here in the States. As a result, many of the feeder streams and other water "sources" are pretty closely moni...

Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!

Greetings all, Well this is it! After much research and late night reading, I'm taking the leap on a hillstream tank. I'm procuring said tank this Saturday (used 55 or 75g) and am looking for input. I've kept tanks for years both salt and fresh and have been out of it for about a decade and with sur...
