They are around $15 in washington state from my lfs, you might be able to get a deal if you buy several at once though.

probably not, they can be aggressive and generally like cooler water than gouramis, the glowlights should be fine though.

Re: Will a larger Pleco kill/eat smaller fish??
red finned sharks can be aggressive and boisterous, it's in their nature. How big are the tanks? How often do you do water changes? Water quality can certainly affect how a fish behaves. And if you have any other options I would never buy fish from a big box store like wal mart. Try to find a trustw...

Re: adapting my filter
If you can, use some of the media from the old canister so you can save some of the good bacteria, and buy a bacteria starter to ensure a smooth change over from the old filter to the new one. It all sounds good to me so I don't see any issues with what you are doing. Good luck!

A few thoughts... I haven't found much need to mess with my sand substrate since I have a burrowing eel that keeps it fairly turned over. I went with pool filter sand and it has worked great for me. I don't have any experience with the 3d backgrounds but I would be inclined to think your khulis migh...

Re: Will a larger Pleco kill/eat smaller fish??
Some of the more carnivorous types of plecos will scavenge but I haven't seen them actively kill another fish. I would look at water quality however if you are losing fish, especially new additions.

Re: adapting my filter
I would imagine that should work fine, as long as the bio load isn't too high. Personally I would invest in a new ehein ecco or similar external filter and run them both. How big is your tank? How many fish? How often do you do water changes?

Re: snails
Snails will reproduce to the amount of food available to them. If you feed the fish too much the leftovers will be consumed by the snails, and if there is a readily available source of food for your loaches they will be less inclined to hunt for food. Without knowing how often you feed and how often...

Re: Newbie setting up a loach tank.
Pentazona barbs are naturally a shy fish, give them lots of cover and somewhat subdued lighting and that should make them feel more confident. I have a group of 9 in my densely planted 29 gallon and they are very outgoing in there. I worked for a lfs for several years and have seen a lot of people h...

mystery loach
I recently bought a group of 6 serpent loaches, Serpenticobitis octozona, and one of them is a different species. I was wondering if anyone wanted to take a stab at identifying him. http://s298.photobucket.com/user/gaiden_26/media/Pics196.jpg.html he is on the skinny side, but getting fatter and lik...
