Re: Hillstream / river tank (sewellia)

Sewellia do well in less flow than most other hillstreams. Koralia powerheads are very powerful, so it depends on which model you use in what size tank whether it would be too much or not- the Evolution line are smaller and more energy efficient and I think 1-2 of them would be great. I put a Koral...

Re: Bamboo Shrimp in a Hillstream Tank???

I got one and he was a little "blown away" at first by the current but he has found places to travel thru and hang out where he can filter food. So, if anyone else is interested, they seem to do OK.

Re: Gastromyzon vs. Sewellia

Thanks for the input! It will help me decide which to keep in my 20L.

Gastromyzon vs. Sewellia

I had a few Sewellia for a few years and am wanting to get more of them or Gastromyzon for my hillstream tank. I want to know if there is any big differences between them. Sewellia seem to cost about twice as much, I'm wondering why? Anyone recommend one genus over the other?

Re: Hello Loach folk--input please for a 20 gal. long tank

In my experience Hara species are not strong enough swimmers for a strong current like a hillstream setup. They are also VERY secretive and will only come out if provided with lots of cover-plants, rocks, wood etc., they dont like open spaces.

Re: Source for Pangio Myersi?

I'm on too many forums to keep up with which ones allow mentions of shop names etc., so I hope it's OK to second this mention. I get almost all my fish from WetSpot. They are great to do business with and have very healthy fish. Pangio myersi isn't on this week's price list, but they post a new list...

Re: How to Feed in a River Tank?

Thanks for the replies. I had thought that turning the powerheads off/on daily wouldn't work because maybe not everyone would want to eat at the same time, especially the shy guy. But I'll certainly give it a try, maybe he will be easy to train.

Re: Glofish

They should not get nearly as hot as the red ones, which as far as I know are also intended as heat lamps for reptiles. The blacklights should be a lower wattage than the red ones too, they come in 8W, 15W etc where the red ones are usually 75W or 150W so the blacklight bulbs run cooler due to their...

How to Feed in a River Tank?

OK, I feel stupid having to ask this. How do you feed your Hillstream/River tanks with their high flow and keep the food from blowing around and onto the filter intakes? So far I only have one very shy Akysis longifilis cat in my tank and he will not eat sinking pellets, he came out when he smelled ...

Re: Glofish

Actually they are very brightly colored in regular light, and the "special" light is just a blacklight, you can buy one at walmart for around $10. You don't have to buy the high dollar LED light.

Re: Red algae

I believe thats the kind of beard algae I was describing. If you don't have plants or inverts, try copper like Mardel's CopperSafe. They do make scrapers that are over 24" long, I have one for my 180 gallon tank. You may have to look online to find one tho. You'll have to scrape and vac the dead alg...

Re: Glofish

I totally get the kitschy tank thing, it's all just a matter of personal aesthetics. Personally I think it would be cute to have a "radioactive pollution" set up for the glofish since they were originally created to detect pollutants. If you could find some decor of radioactive barrels or some such,...

Re: Red algae

Are you sure it's not diatoms? If you could post a photo it might help. The stuff you have may be "beard algae" which can be purple, gray, black or red colored. It can have long "hairs" or short ones. It can be caused by low CO2, low pH and high light as well as excess nutrients. Copper will kill be...

Re: Glofish

Sorry for the confusion. A GMO is a Genetically Modified Organism. Some people are afraid to eat food that has been genetically modified to make it more prolific or disease resistant. I personally don't have an issue with this. I do however have an issue with people modifying, thru gene insertion in...
