According to your information, it seems that your fish suffering from bacterial infection.The most effective way to avoid it is to use Epsom salt. But, you must be very careful since Epsom salt is powerful than regular salt. Add 1/8 teaspoons to around 22-25 liters.

It deponds on the wood. If the wood smells, or comes from a Conifera tree - I would not use it But there is nothing, what soewver against the use of for instance oak.
