According to your information, it seems that your fish suffering from bacterial infection.The most effective way to avoid it is to use Epsom salt. But, you must be very careful since Epsom salt is powerful than regular salt. Add 1/8 teaspoons to around 22-25 liters.

It deponds on the wood. If the wood smells, or comes from a Conifera tree - I would not use it But there is nothing, what soewver against the use of for instance oak. Recently, I got a round shape fish tank with two fish..I do not know their names. They were fine for about two weeks before they die. I still do not know what happened. The tank was not supplied with oxygen. How to determine what happened. I changed the water every two-three days.
