Re: Happiness is: Now Video too

Fran, I use 2 HOB filters & a Maxijet 1200 powerhead in my "river-ish" 55g tank with hillstream loaches. The surface is quite rippled from the flow. You can aim the powerhead return toward the surface to get that effect. You tank is twice as wide front to back than mine. Try 1 PH, you can always add...

Re: DISSOLVED OXYGEN TEST KITS

Fran, to me "adequate oxygenation" involves a lot of surface movement. I've never tested for oxygen levels nor do I feel the need, if there is nice rippling surface water movement all the time. The problem I see with only an airstone is "wimpy" surface agitation. The bubbles don't do all that much.....

Re: companions/dither fish

Danios would be fine, as would white clouds or Vietnamese white clouds. You could also look at small barbs (octozona or hexazonas) or dwarf rainbows. I even kept dennisoni barbs with zebra loachs.

Re: Happiness is: Now Video too

Fran, in some ways that hierarchy will always exist with most loaches & some other fish too (tetras come to mind). That's why more fish in a "shoal" is better, any bullying is spread out. That's part of the "rule" of 5 or 6 of a species as a minimum is golden. You can have success in smaller numbers...

Re: Happiness is: Now Video too

I used to feed a raw or cooked shrimp once in a while for a treat but it can be messy too. I used a long skewer to both hold it down & make removal of SOME of the leftovers easier. Again, before a WC. I also used to make a raw seafood mix for my discus juveniles & shared it with loaches. It had clam...

Re: Happiness is: Now Video too

Safe, probably; messy, maybe too. That why I said to try any veg/fruit right before a water change. (they won't care if it's not on "the day", lol) I never did the size/timing differences you're trying...but it seems like eventually it'll be ok. Fingers crossed for your fish, Fran. & Happy Thanksgiv...

Re: WHAT is this creature?

Eww! I'm not sure what it is. I was expecting fat red "detritus worms", generally harmless. But yours is not that.

Re: Happiness is: Now Video too

Everybody is loving the veg! I can't tell, is it cuke or zucchini?

Will they be have slightly cooked sweet potato for Thanksgiving? Pumpkin? Lots of veggies are good to try...right before a water change is good if it may be messy (broccoli & banana come to my mind).

Cool! It sounds like they all had a gentle capture & relocation.

We'd love to see new pics!

Re: What else should I feed my sids?

My sids were never fussy about foods. Flakes, tablets, pellets; any & all were all good. Last time I kept them I had 9 or 10 tanks & offered many choices. They never seemed super enthusiastic about frozen brine shrimp or veggies of any kind. Chopped frozen bloodworms were ok, whole seemed a bit too ...

Re: VITAMINS?

Fran, the only time I added vitamins was when I homemade fish foods. Most all commercial foods have added vitamins, those should be enough.

Re: "Borneo sucker" loaches ID

I almost always end up having removing all décor to catch any loaches. I like Charles's hard container idea. Fortunately I haven't had to try to catch hillies yet. Go slow, patience & good luck!

Re: Talk to me of sidthimunki

I love sids! You could have quite a few in 40g. I agree with Bas Pels, sand is better. Last time I kept them on Eco Complete, like coarse sand/fine gravel. They were fine but turned very dark, almost no chain pattern because of the black substrate. I don't think a shark would be a great fit with loa...
