Re: Is this Gastromyzon zebrinus?
I had ctenos & they didn't look like your fish. I'm not good at hillstream IDs but I'd say yours could be zebrinus. Hopefully someone more knowlegeable will help. You might post on facebook loachfanatics. It takes a while to be approved...

Re: Merry Christmas - Loaches Online style!
MTS, I belong to a plant club so now every tank has at least some. I keep a sponge over the filters' intakes to catch the big debris. I clean them every week or so during water changes or if filter return flow slows. When I had hard water java ferns grew like crazy. I used to give away a plastic gro...

Re: clown loach compatibility with angelfish, zebra loaches, yoyo and pleco
I haven't kept yoyos but suspect they might bother the angel long fins more than clowns or striatas. Because most loaches are crepuscular (dawn & dusk active) they may bother the angels. I had smallish (3-4 inch?) clowns with angels for a short time. The angels would thrash around when the loaches z...

Re: Clown Loaches now 28 years old
Happy new year to you & your clowns "birthday". I guess it's like race horses, all are "born" at the first of the year. Congrats! It's always nice to see your annual updated pics.

Re: Merry Christmas - Loaches Online style!
Very nice new logs, congrats! I have a couple suggestions for you, I hope you'll take in a nice way, that's how I mean them. You might try having a bit more angling to your caves layout instead of all in a line along the back. Another idea is to try java fern &/or anubias real live plants attached t...

Re: Dwarf chain loach catastrophe, and a valuable lesson about quarantine tanks learned
I'm sorry you learned the hard way of the value of QT. It sounds like you had 2 issues: ich (white spot, fairly treatable for the most part) & "skinny" disease (that can be many things) or internal parasites (I'd treat with flubendazole or Levamisole). All are more easily treated in a smaller quaran...

Re: Burmese loach and gold zebra loach differences
As you've seen it can be very hard to tell several species apart when they're small. & often now they're in mixed groups from what I've seen (pre-covid). Using "common" names, small loaches can be similar until about 2 inches. B. kubotai (Burmese Border) usually have wider dark vertical bars & a hin...

Re: "Suddenly" Aggressive Golden Zebra Loach...Help Please
Yes, I don't like common names either, Bas. When I searched "golden zebra loach", another loach genus came up, a sinibotia. There are zebra loaches, (b.striata) too. Clown loaches most of us know, but also royal clowns (a leptobotia species), not related or common... Especially in an international f...

Re: "Suddenly" Aggressive Golden Zebra Loach...Help Please
To me "golden zebra loaches" are botia histrionica, not yoyos (b. almorae). No matter, I think Bas Pels has it right. It's lonely & aggressive because of that. It wants same species "friends" & will try to get other fish to fill that need & acts aggressive when they don'y respond in the right "loach...

Re: Black Kuhli Loach changing color
That doesn't sound good. What are your water test parameters (ammonia, nitrite & nitrate for starters)? You might try doing more +/or larger water changes, that's always my first go to treatment. Not hard in a 10g. Does the color-changer pangio eat well? Any sores or red gills?

They look like a male & female to me too, good luck! Mine breed every year & a couple fry survive. So fun even in a community tank.

Re: Vaillantella maassi Mystery
The V. maassii didn't seem to hurt their biting "victims" much except the "extra" male eventually. No pangios were damaged, but they learned to stay away from the fork tails territory...but maybe hillstreams were easier prey? Did you move decor to the other tank? That truly is a mystery...or a ghost...

Re: Vaillantella maassi Mystery
Pretty cool Katy! Are the tanks close enough for a jump? Or did I misunderstand? In MA I had 4 v. maassii in a 40g long with 2 pangio species. The "extra" smaller male didn't live for more than a year or so. I wondered if it might have been a similar but different species, I think there are a couple...

Re: Lone Rostrata in with Kubs
Sorry no pics, wrong hobby. But you're not missing much, each tank has different algae, 2 have tons duck weed, jungle val & java moss. I set the low bar for my plant club, lol. I got my T. taeniatus from the Wet Spot on a driving vacation packed like for shipping :). They don't seem to have all the ...
