Panorama picture

Hi *@*, I did some re-decorating in my loach community tank .. good enough reason to post a new picture. ;-) I threw out the bamboo tubes .. pretty but they were rotting too much for my liking. These 40mm PVC tubes are definitely not pretty but more healthy I guess (tried to hide them a little). Add...

I almost never vacuum my gravel, either. Perhaps once every few years. And when I do, not much dirt is coming out. With 10x per hour water agitation not much gunk has the chance to lie around anyway. :) I have ~6cm gravel in my tank, grain-size 2-3mm. From what I've read, it may be even counterprodu...

Bully, just give him some time. In my tank the striatas are the kings, no doubt about that. Even the smallest striata doesn't hesitate to aggressively nibble away at a clown loach 3 times the mass. Don't get me wrong, it's not so bad that I should intervene .. but it's quite clear who's th...

Marcos, I would rank my 5 kubotais as slightly more aggressive than clowns but definitely less "playful" than botia striata (which can be really mean IMHO). I really can't see how they would kill other kubotais, let alone a SAE. All SAE I ever had definitely knew how to defend themselves .. plus the...

Hydor Koralia/Tunze Nanostream vs. "classic" pumps

Hi *@*. I decided I need  more flow  for my 300 L (79 gallons) 120x50x50cm loach community tank. Right now I have 2 "classic" powerheads doing 570 and 1000 L/h respectively in a nice "U-shaped" stream (when viewed from above). So I looked at powerful yet economic powerheads of the ...

Whoa! I GOTTA remember this one.
"No, your honour, I did not steal the money. As you can clearly see it's still next to the credit card and driving licence in the original wallet, clearly stating who is the true owner." ROFLBTCSTC.

Welcome viranh :) Unfortunately your loach problem is probably caused by multiple reasons (small tank, only one loach instead of 5+, water too cold, "wrong" dither fish). Please have a look at these wonderful articles which can really help you to keep those wonderful fish successfully: http://www.lo...

It's perfectly normal! Loaches do this all the time (especially after major changes in tank decoration and the like) and yoyo loaches in particular like to swim around alot.

Loaches are weird fish sometimes, that's part of why I like them so much. :)

What about, instead of the rainbow-fish, another cichlid, like severum? It's even calmer then the Blue Dempsey, and its gold version is beautyful. I wouldn't add too many different fish, at least not right from the start. 2x 10 loaches a shark and a Jack Dempsey means plenty of character in the tan...

Now, instead of the tetras [ dempsey food  ] what would u sugest ? thnks  Rainbowfish are often recommended as addition in loach tanks. I don't know about Jack Dempsies though .. except that adding a cichlid with a high aggression level can go really wrong .. or it can work perfectly. Ha...

If you skip on the cories and provide plenty of wood for hideouts, 2x 10 would be ok and a very nice "family" to watch.

my question is the following. Is this population proper for my tank? Unfortunately you shouldn't add the dojo loaches to the rest of the fish you chose .. they are true cold water fish and will not be happy at the temperatures the tropical fish need. More kubotais and yoyos would be good, though! A...

I'll add my story as an encouragement, albeit a weak one. ;-) About 2 months ago I bought 5 botia kubotai. All looked very healthy, active, and generally FAT. Size was about 7cm each. I put all 5 directly into the main tank and all but one of the kubotais were perfect within a few minutes. In fact 4...

The spots on connor's fish are baffling. Been there for a month? Are there any behavioral signs of a problem? The alpha was more passive and hiding for about a week and its fins were affected by fungus. I managed to catch her easily last week (all hail bamboo tubes!) and bathed her in a bucket medi...

Just as a reminder: While vitamins are lovely stuff - please keep in mind that adding too much of them might also cause problems (-> Hypervitaminosis) .. especially since fish are quite small they probably need much more minute amounts than us humans, which most of the vitamin pills are made for. -C...
