Yeah, I agree-the salt and pepperage of the substrate is surprisingly striking.

The best feed-meat is tank raised freshwater white fish (tilapia, trout, etc.).

There are a number of sands out there marketed as "marine" when in fact they are completely inert and preferable by my standards because of the large, rounded grain size-I use it (in this particular case Estes brand) in all my freshwater tanks. As stated, though, true CaCO3 based sands are out of th...

Oddly enough, pretty much every ballitorid I've ever owned has preferred prepared or dried foods over the wormy stuff. In any case, here's an old textbook trick to get our limnivores to feed; take whatever stone you're trying to cultivate algae on. crack two egg whites, and mix with a handful of boi...

I'm sure everyone has seen their ballitorids rasping on the front plane of the glass. While this serves to show that they are probably to some degree, obligate limnivores, they obviously also seem to enjoy meatier foods (i.e. catfish pellets, whatever). Anything that so blatantly forages like a awfu...

Wow. Thanks for the info. What is your opinion on the second picture of a different fish? Are these also stellatus? Most of my tank is collectively one light surface, too, so maybe that's the case, although it maintains this coloration even against a solid black background. That is also one drop dea...
