Re: Starting a tank for Weather loaches

Weather Loaches are not the same as Sewellias. Here are links to the most common Weather Loaches: https://www.loaches.com/species-index/weather-loach-misgurnis-anguillicaudatus Here is a link to another Weather Loach: Especially, read the note at the bottom about a permit needed to keep 'Weather Loa...

Re: Ich?

Looks like you are winning!
Continue the medicine until at least a week after you find the last Ich on the fish. This makes sure the Ich has had a chance to go through its life cycle to the time when they are vulnerable to the medicine.

Re: Ich?

With any treatment: Maintain the highest temperature the fish are comfortable with. Good water movement to ensure highest oxygen levels. The more water changes the better. Remember that at the beginnings of any treatment there are already tiny Ich on the fish that you cannot see. In the first few da...

Re: Ich?

Ich can often hide in the gills.
The stressed Cherry Barbs, hanging at the surface may have had Ich in their gills, so were having problems breathing.

Re: Ich?

When you turn up the heat the water cannot hold quite so much oxygen. Increase water movement, more surface air-water action. You could add a circulation pump, or lower the water level a bit so the filter returns with a bit of a splash. Raise the temperature a couple of degrees F or 1 degree C per d...

Re: Ich?

That does look like it could be Ich. Flashing + white spots on fish is very suspicious. Keep up the water changes, emphasizing vacuuming the bottom, and all the surfaces. Ich falls off the fish and lands on almost everything in the tank to reproduce. You can remove quite a few by vacuuming, before t...

Re: Botia striata questions AKA zebra

I would see no problem at all with half a dozen Botia striata and a dozen or so schooling fish about the size of Rasboras for the upper area. Perhaps half a dozen Otocinclus for algae. The fish store people do not understand the fishless cycle. If you did a good fishless cycle (sounds like you did) ...

Re: water hardness?

A little more information about water hardness: GH, General Hardness, is a measure of calcium and magnesium. Some fish are quite particular and need the GH they are used to in the wild. Other fish handle a wide range of GH. Most Loaches can handle a fairly wide range of GH. The concern is if the GH ...

"how do you get a loach that's stuck on a flat shiny floor"
or stuck to the side of the tank...

Use a credit card. Easily slides under the fish, and can tempt them into detaching themselves without harming them.

Re: Do hillstream loaches sift through sand?

Yes, most stem plants grow faster than crypts, so will vacuum up the nutrients as fast as they show up in the water.

Re: Do hillstream loaches sift through sand?

I agree that changing TDS can indeed kill fish. It is very important that the fish keeper knows the water parameters in their tap and in their tank(s). In my case I know it is the gas bubbles. GH, KH, TDS and all other tests show the new water is good, no serious change in mineral levels. Just the b...

Re: Do hillstream loaches sift through sand?

The pH rise as the water ages suggests that a lot of the bubbles are CO2. The plants pearling also suggests there is a lot of CO2 in the water. Can certainly be a mix of gasses including O2 and N2. I cannot do large water changes in the winter because of gasses in the water. I run the water into a g...

Re: Do hillstream loaches sift through sand?

They come from streams that are usually too steep and fast flowing for sand. They are more often working over rocks.
Interesting to see that they can handle the sand and find their food.

Re: Kuhli Identification?

Are they a striped pattern? There are more than one species with stripes. Some include some spots among the stripes, some have stripes just going about half way around their body, others have more complete stripes. Just how red are they? I hope they are not sick or infested with internal parasites. ...
