Thanks, the cuttlefish bone is from the sea. I live not far from the coast and find them fairly regularly washed up. Probably I'll go and find a new one and wash it at home.
That's great advice about what to do with it. If I get some shrimps I'll try that as my water isn't hard.

Re: Some Shrimps Photos to Share
Cuttlefish bone isn't a problem as I have one lying around oddly enough. That can't pollute the water in some way? I just cut off a little piece and the shrimps will feed on it? I've read that Amano shrimp larvae require brackish water to grow into young shrimps. Found this intriguing video here; ht...

Re: goldfish injuries
They are beautiful goldfish. Comets are in my opinion, the loveliest goldfish around.
I did a google search "goldfish turning white" and it seems it isn't so unheard of for orange goldfish to slowly turn white. Never come across it myself however.

Those shrimps look great.
I'm also thinking of adding some, probably Amano shrimps. It is true they are happy in an unheated aquarium? Has anyone here managed to breed them?

Re: new hillstream tank
I would only worry about the other fish in your tank because White Cloud Mountain Minnows are hardy and enjoy a variety of set ups. You're correct in keeping them in a group (school) as they become nervous when there are too few of them. I currently have 9 together in my 60 litre tank, although I ma...

Re: new hillstream tank
but, there is one thing that's bothering me, the text says: "sympatric" and that means not in the same area? Sympatric means species inhabiting the same area/environment and implies that they live alongside each other, meeting in that environment. And that is interesting to find out that White Clou...

Very cute fish and lovely set up.
(And, yes, absolutely right to move that little plant!)

Re: new hillstream tank
Must admit I was surprised a bit too. I've always kept them in fast moving water and they seem to enjoy the flow from the filter. They do manage to sleep at night in a small part of the tank that is more still and hide around a rock there or even tucked up in some java moss. The water in those natur...

Re: new hillstream tank
Found this about their habitat(s) in the wild: Habitat Little published information exists but one of the populations rediscovered close to the type locality in Guangdong inhabits a sluggish, spring-fed mountain stream with clear, shallow water and dense growths of aquatic vegetation (Yi et al. 2004...

Re: Need set-up tips for hillstream first timer, Please!
In my experience, trying to grow plants from the wild in an aquarium doesn't work; they always die after a few weeks. I've tried small weeds and mosses from upland brooks near to my home and never succeeded. The only success is in one tank I have a stone that just breaches the surface and on that am...

Re: First Hillstream tank (loaches and Gobies)
Beautiful tank and looks like it should be easy to maintain too. I'm thinking that the hair algae may lessen by itself as time goes by, perhaps as the plants grow and compete for the water's nutrients or something.
