Re: witch is best sand or gravel ?

But you have to be careful adding water to the tank, so the sand doesn't get sucked into the filter, and cause the impeller to be damaged. Good point, I usually have a sponge slipped over the filter intake as a pre-filter to make sure sand does not get sucked into the filter/impeller ... spo...

Re: What's wrong with my water, and what am I doing wrong?

I understand that any one of us can take things the wrong way occasionally :) Until you pointed out your sex, I was not aware of what it was, so please believe me when I say that I did not even wonder about it as it makes no difference to your knowledge or experience in fish keeping. I do find it ve...

Re: neon tetras acting wierd anyone know why ????

Neon Tetras are a shoaling fish, not a schooling fish. My experience with neons has always been that they school (i.e. face roughly same way, as with most tetras) as opposed to only shoal (live in a group, for example, harlequin rasboras), are you saying this from your own experience or did you rea...

Re: What's wrong with my water, and what am I doing wrong?

p.s. if you are interested: Prime does not actually convert ammonia to ammonium (which is the opposite of what I said earlier) and Seachem have no idea if or how it detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, their claims being based on their customers telling them that it alleviates the symptoms, apparently

Re: What's wrong with my water, and what am I doing wrong?

1. I wasn't afraid to ask for the filter goop or gravel out of fear of looking funny. I'm not a shallow person. Rather, because of how important my fish actually are to me, I was fearful of introducing a bacterial infection to them. You're not aware of my previous issue posted in the Health and Tre...

Re: witch is best sand or gravel ?

The other thing to consider with bottom feeders is that most foods will disintegrate quickly and can fall through gravel, polluting it, while they would sit on top of the sand comfortably.

Re: kuhli loaches as ground crew.

I have three Gold gouramis and plan on a few more. Rope fish are my passion so 2 or 3 of them, 1 Simensis, 12 Glass cats and a few Otto cats. Be careful with the gouramis: they grow large and are quite aggressive when adult! 1m 2f is the usual recommended number for a 4 ft tank, so I'd be wanting a...

Re: What's wrong with my water, and what am I doing wrong?

I was afraid to ask for any of their filter goop or gravel. Their tanks seem extremely clean and healthy (It's truly an amazing place.), but I was afraid of introducing a bacterial infection to my tank. You would be very unlikely to get an infection through media, but it is still possible. Please d...

Neons are egg scatterers, so it's nothing to do with breeding behaviour. How many neons do you have and what other species? What are the dimensions of the tank?

Re: witch is best sand or gravel ?

The corys and loaches have barbels around their mouths that can get damaged and red with coarse gravel ... Actually, certain species of Corys have been known to prefer gravel when in the wild, choosing to stay in the gravely areas instead of sandy areas of the river, but it is true that most appear...

Re: Advice on Bullying?

What are the dimensions of the tank and are you 100% sure that you have a Guianacara sphenozona ? G. sphenozona usually have a high aggression towards members of their own species, but are peaceful with others and usually don't grow that large! It would be great if you could post a photo of the fish...

Re: witch is best sand or gravel ?

what does everyone think is the best for freshwater tropical fish sand or gravel ???? I prefer sand because many fish will dig and some will even bury themselves in it, but most of the fish I keep exhibit this behaviour (for example, earth eaters and Mbuna). I usually try to choose the substrate by...

I would want at least 10 so that they have plenty of their own kind to interact with, and more like 20. That would still leave you plenty of space for other fish :)
