you have a 55g right?... i would still take out as much water as you can... it's incredibly heavy just to lift one side to put in the carpet glide... While you're at the hardware store pick up 3 - 4, five gallon buckets... and I wouldn't seal up the tank with plastic.. the fish will sufficate. maybe...

nice pics. i recently moved my 29 g tank... i think i go it down to a science... most of the weight is in the water. I had 3 buckets ready for the tank water... I left 2 inches of water in the tank.. little fishes can stay there. the bigger fish can go in the bucket. I lifted one end of the tank and...

hmmm. rich is right, it could be a planaria or a related flatworm... I've never heard of a planaria being that big. They're not parasitic. They eat bio-waste & bacteria. A few water changes usually clear them up. here's a drawing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:FlatwormZICA.png they have primitiv...

along with the whiteworms, i'm getting mites and these little white bugs... under the microscope, they look like a termite/louse thing... they're 1/4 the size of the mites. I sterilized my soil & peat moss... They probably got in with the starter culture or food. I hope they're not a problem... The ...

for upside down catfish, just flip them right side up to hypnotize them ... ha. their brains have adapted to be upside down. what evolutionary advantage that has, i have no idea. hard to imagine. they usually kill the shark to get at the fins. It doesn't taste like anything in particular but it's al...

whiteworms feeding

do any of you feed whiteworms to your loaches? I have a culture going but it'll be another month until I can harvest. I'm sure they'll love it since worms are part of their natural diet. are there parasites or diseases associated with whiteworms? And is it true that they're fattening? I always assum...

you know how you can hypnotize a lizard or an alligator by flipping it upside down and rubbing its belly? I wonder if you can do that to a fish too.

a tripod helps out a lot... if they're relatively still, you can open up the aperture or slow down the shutter speed or both, in essense getting more light to you picture.

oh, nice loaches btw.. i'll have a big tank someday.

i like cherry barbs (Barbus titteya) myself.. they have personality and are pretty cute. The male turns cherry red when mating and the lattice scales are cool looking too.

good luck. let us know how it turns out. You might have issues with algae since your CO2 will be low.. The nutrients will be used up be the algae instead of the plants. ps.. if you consider this tank low-tech, you might find some insights http://dataguru.org/misc/aquarium/125tank.html i wouldn't use...

your low-tech idea limits you to only a handful of plants like java ferns, java moss... you have to think that in nature, things aren't confined in a 75gallon environment. Things are in balance in nature. In a tank things are not in balance, so we have to add certain elements to make plants grow, li...

i have 3 b. histrionica in my measly 29 gallon(US) planted tank.. they seem to be doing fine. They fin nip my rainbow though... But if i have more than 3 they would keep themselves entertained. They are active by day and like to hide sometimes. I couldn't find one of mine for 2-3 days. they nibble o...
