Thanks for the replies!! I would absolutely love to look at some of this stuff under a microscope. When I was a kid the microscope was my absolute favourite "toy," though it wasn't used like a toy. I know there is a living world that isn't visible to the naked eye, so I suppose I shouldn't have been...

"Ichy" Situation Finally Under Control

Hello... I haven't been here for awhile because my computer is suffering from the famed Antivirus 2009, and is slowly getting worse. I have been told it is only a matter of time and money before I will have to erase my entire hard drive and start over. :( But this is not the place to talk about a vi...

Microscopic Life in Freshwater Tanks

Hello... I was cleaning my plants last night when I noticed some white, stringy things clinging to the side of the stem of an Amazon Sword. They are very small...only a fraction of a millimetre thick and perhaps nearly half a millimetre or more tall. At first I thought they were algae, but then as I...

I have never owned botias (yet...a BIG YET  ), but it seems with my adult weather loaches that they click most when sucking in food. I have been continually surprised by how much food they can actually suck into their mouths...half an Omega One freeze-dried tubifex worm cube, nearly a quarter ...

Hello... Although it is amusing to watch your fish gobble up a frozen cube, the temp difference in their bodies isn't good for them. Even for us it is best to drink room temp water, though it doesn't taste as good. The frozen food is safe to feed without boiling. My favourite way is to defrost...

Hello... I'm not sure how to respond because I have never kept HHL. I hope someone who knows more replies to help you decide what to do. I think I would be more likely to try to think which approach will involve the least stress. If he is already settled and living with the others and seems to be im...

Hello, Diana.., Thanks for your (once again) timely and well-delivered information. :D I have decided the small tank is nothing but a death trap, and is not fit for anything living, ecxept, perhaps, my daughter's sea monkeys. Last night when I came home from work, I checked the levels, and the nitri...

Sorry, it's me again.... I just thought of something else. Sounds to me like your loach may have had a problem with his swim bladder. The swim bladder is what helps to keep a fish or loach balanced while swimming, so this would explain the erratic floating-swimming, and then later, the bloating. I b...

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of your loach. I also keep weather loaches, and they are wonderful pets. I consider my loaches pets and the others, just fish, though I love them as well. I was attracted to the loaches from the moment I saw them, but when I got them, I had no idea just h...

Whew! That must have been a relief! I bet now you're not sure whether to applaud your loaches' ingenuity or feel sorry for the snail. I wonder who's doing it, or if you'll catch them???

Hello again I hope your little guy is feeling better. I would also keep an eye on how your new loach reacts to the danios. I posted a thread: Help!!! Giant Danios Stressing Weather loaches! You can read about it there, a little further down the page. No aggression here, just the fast danios were rea...

Hello.., I've heard very good things about using Indian Almond leaves, including encouraging sidthimunki's to breed. (I think I read that here!) Where would you buy them? I have never seen them being sold. I know having leaf litter is very good for many bottom-dwellers, as it simulates their natural...

Hello again..,

I meant to say, as this is very important, that all my new loaches are very small, including the weather, being about 4-5 cm long. At this size, I'm hoping the ammonia and nitrites they produce will be less.

Thanks Again,

Maintenance on a VERY Small Quarantine tank....

Hello.., Today I brought home some new loaches! :D I want to eventually add them to my 55 Gallon community, which is virtually empty for its size, having only 3 white tetras, and 2 weather loaches in it. I read today in my new book LOACHES-A Natural History and Aquarium Care (Just got it today after...
