My kuhli loaches love Indian Almond Leaves, but I've never tried any others. Yes, the tank has acquired a slightly tea-stained tint, which I like. http://stores.ebay.com/Amys-Ketapang-Inc?refid=store The first ones I got were grade A+ large, but I just ordered a bunch of grade A small ones, because ...

Before I got the heater, his tank stayed at a constant 72 F (the room temp.) The fluorescent light above him warms the shelf above it, but doesn't help his 2.5 gallon glass fishbowl 10" below it.

The heater has no setting, it's just a little flat thing. But the timer can handle more than one on/off program, so I'll try giving him three small warmup periods instead of one long one.
THANKS!

daily temperature change

The little Hydor Mini-Heater I got for my ADF is too efficient to leave on all the time, so it's on a timer, on at 9 AM and off at 4 PM. His water temp goes from 75 to 85 F, rather like it might in the wild. He definitely notices when the heater comes on, because he flattens himself between it and t...

http://stores.ebay.com/Amys-Ketapang-Inc?refid=store Amy's great, fast and inexpensive, and the leaves are washed, clean, and beautifu, and the kuhlis LOVE them. The ones I had were grade A+ large, but I just ordered a bunch of grade A small ones, because one of my angelfish got caught temporarily b...

A 2 gallon fishbowl doesn't seem very big on my desk, but you'd be surprised how well a frog the size of a quarter can hide in a clear glass bowl with one fake plant, a heater, and a thermometer. He likes to administer heart checks on a regular basis, usually by flattening himself between the heater...

The shelf is nothing fancy -- just a hunk of plexiglas about an inch shorter than the tank measures from front to back, and it's raised up on some water bottle lids filled with sand, positioned about half an inch from the side, front and back of the tank, and held in place by the heavy rock on top. ...

Not the best way to wake up!
I've had slow leaks, nothing as dramatic as your disaster, but I still had to tear the whole thing down, fish and all, and re-seal the corners. Now that I have a real job, I got my first acrylic tank. Another big plus is nobody can hide in the corners.

Striped Kuhlis, of course :D Mine have a shelf to hide beneath, deliberately fashioned to resemble the inside of an undergravel filter (every kuhli's favorite haven). Plus, I can easily peer in and see them.

 I've stripped tanks down to the bare bottom in panic several times, picking through gravel and filter media. Only once did I not find everyone -- one of my beloved ADFs, whom I suspect the angelfish ate. One time I lifted out the big plastic log to clean it, not realizing a kuhli was inside! F...

One of the two LFS said they won't carry them anymore, they're "too fragile." These were worth the price, healthy and happy. The other LFS, the one where I got them, hasn't gotten any more in, striped or plain black.

Whew, good to know I'm not developing Alzheimer's. That's about what I remember them being thirty years ago (no wisecracks, please.)

Simple mathematics (my favorite type) says at $1.99 each, for that $89 I could have gotten 45 kuhlis (x 3 inches per loach = I'd need a 150 gallon tank!)

kuhli loach price/availability

When I bought the six kuhlis I have in the tank here at work, they were $14.99 each. I kid you not. But I immediately and excitedly bought all six, with noplace to put them, and had the pet store hang onto them for me for two weeks. (They also greet me by name when I walk in; sometimes I think I sho...

Jonas, it was the dark angel (appropriately enough) with his nose in the corner in the photo. I did put the kuhli shelf back together, and so far he's stayed out. Loachmom, glad you're enjoying your angels. Mine were purchased pretty much as live tank decorations, but now I love them, not only for t...
