Great photos and excellent idea to show them side by side. Thanks Emma. BTW is that a special tank you have for taking photos? It seems narrow. Either way, great stuff. It would be great to have similar photos for each common species in the species index!

Are you putting the hillstreams in without cycling the tank? If so, is that wise?

I don't keep hillstreams, but I think most people who keep them (seriousy) don't have planted tanks - I'm just guessing based on their natural habitat mind you.

I thought someone was writing about me there for a minute. But then I got to the turtles, which I never kept. Welcome. Your clowns look nice. You are one of many who have seen the light after starting to keep loaches. Looking forward to more pictures and tales from Ames, Iowa! What kind of LFSs do y...

Interspecific interactions

This am I noticed two loaches doing the circle battle, and thought it was two zebra loaches (striata). Since I hadn't seen them doing this before I looked a bit closer, and it turned out to be one striata and one kubotai. It appeared the striata was trying to take over some favoured real estate, so ...

Same here (clown loaches). But they become active at feeding time and off and on during the day.

Tough without a photo. The best thing to do, given that you have the loach book (an excellent investment, I might add) is to compare with the photos and descriptions on the species index provided at http://www.loaches.com/species-index with the fish you have.

Yeah, it took quite a lot of patience to get the heads rather than the back ends or just a leaf.

Interesting. Mine are cautious, but really curious, but not shy exactly! Mine (as you can see above) are kept with clowns and kubos, and quite a few dithers (giant danios and black ruby barbs being the most notable ones in terms of activity). I hope you get responses to your questions! BTW Emma - do...
