This am I noticed two loaches doing the circle battle, and thought it was two zebra loaches (striata). Since I hadn't seen them doing this before I looked a bit closer, and it turned out to be one striata and one kubotai. Tough without a photo. The best thing to do, given that you have the loach book (an excellent investment, I might add) is to compare with the photos and descriptions on the species index provided at http://www.loaches.com/species-index with the fish you have.

Interesting. Mine are cautious, but really curious, but not shy exactly! Mine (as you can see above) are kept with clowns and kubos, and quite a few dithers (giant danios and black ruby barbs being the most notable ones in terms of activity).
