Re: Praise be to silica pool filter sand!

No idea what grade mine is, I threw away the bags and didn't look for the grade size on them. Default assumption would be 20 grade, it's not all that small (eg: individual grains visible when some is accidentally vacuumed up into cleaning bucket). By sand sifting, I did mean spewing through gills, y...

Praise be to silica pool filter sand!

I just thought I'd give a shout out to how great silica pool filter sand is as a substrate. Ever since I started using it for my substrate back in November 2021, there was never the slighest glance back. These are the reasons why: -Small, dense, and uniformly sized grains. The small grain size and d...

Re: Temperature for pictus catfish

Thanks. It does make one wonder what is at play. My best guess would be that cold water flowing down from the Andes headwaters may be dropping the temperature of lowland water that would otherwise be warm. I've heard from another fishkeeping website that this is the case for the Magdalena - the pers...

Temperature for pictus catfish

I just thought I'd share an interesting observation I made on the small pictus catfish I'm growing up in my second 473 liter until they get big enough to go into the originally archerfish 473 liter. Their current water temperature is 20-22 Celsius (seems to vary a bit, IDK why), as opposed to the 24...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Could be. I imagine lots of water replacements stimulates the rainy season, which has equivalent phenomena of changing water levels.
Would be a good experiment to try for those with the resources.

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

I saw one of the black kuhlis laying eggs today! They were not viable, so I suspect they were just dropped instead of spawned. Nonetheless I'd love to be proven wrong on both that and my assumption of any babies not surviving. :) The scenario is definitely different from Richard Bias' breedi...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Some feeding, maintenance, and other updates. New Life Spectrum Grow is proving to be a good pellet food for the kuhlis to get their share quickly. Its smaller 0.5mm size compared to the Krill Gran/Discus Gran that I would usually feed is letting them eat their fill easier (think of the time differe...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Thanks very much! :D Couldn't agree more that there is no single right answer, and you're right to at least an extent that the recommended temperature for (x) fish isn't necessarily the right one. For example, 27-28 Celsius for roseline sharks - this is oft-recommended as an upper bound but not some...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Everything is going very nicely so far. The biggest surprise is how well the kuhlis are doing at the 21-22 Celsius temperatures at which the tank is set. I decided to try them at that temperature after reading Seriously Fish recommended it, mostly to ensure as high dissolved oxygen as possible. My j...

How long to powerfeed undernourished kuhli loaches?

Some of the kuhlis I have are on the undernourished side - aka the only time to powerfeed any fish. Tropical Krill/Discus Gran, bloodworms, brine shrimp, and mysis shrimp ought to be good choices (with appropriate attention will be given to water quality while this is being done, of course). I shoul...

Roseline shark amount of current?

I notice the young roseline sharks I picked up not too long ago tend to spend all of their time out of the main flow from my Sicce pumps. No swimming against the current at all, so it seems the pumps are currently only there for oxygenation purposes. This is in spite of everything I have read about ...

My pet store got some of these in recently and I may be able to get a few at some point. Has anyone else had these fish, or at least seen them for sale? They have a basically identical pattern to the white line pictus catfish/Pimelodus albofasciatus. I've always admired this species somewhat but can...

Re: problem? or am I just impatient?

Another thing that can help is to get a good amount of media from an established tank (from another friend who keeps fish, local aquarium club, pet store, etc) and add it to the tank's filter. A good amount is needed because with that much (ie: enough beneficial bacteria), all the NO2 will be turned...

Re: Building an aquarium

There have been many times when easy to assemble furniture has let me down by not being durable enough for its intended uses. However, Aquatic fundamentals aquarium stands are not among them. This aquarium stand is solid. I think it is mostly due to it only having a couple of parts – with all of th...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Forgot to add this, but last Wednesday I picked up the roseline sharks and striped kuhli loaches. Here are the roselines in my tank, stil settling in. Color ought to improve when they do. :) https://i.imgur.com/leGitaR.jpg No pictures of the striped kuhlis I bought until I move them to this tank bec...
