Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Thanks Bas. That's good to know for both my current planted tank and any future plan changes.

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

@Nancy, I do not plan on having live plants. This is because of the following: -Don't want a Martin Thoene-style disaster of filter-clogging plants. We touched on this before and while you were correct that things can happen, I'd prefer to reduce the risk wherever I can. I do have a planted tank (my...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

One final update. I'll be going with 9 zebra, 9 Burmese, and 36 kuhlis instead of the previous plan. Replacing the yoyos with smaller species does (as I said before) allow for more smaller loaches, but the previous plan seemed (very slightly) pushing it in terms of Botia numbers, so more kuhlis may ...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Pictures will be shared for sure if I can make clowns and yoyos work. That won't be for a few years though, since I still have to save up for the custom tank. Concerning understocking vs stocking as densely as possible without overstocking for Botia, some of the best-faring Botia I have seen come fr...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Indeed Nancy, I had read about your 284 liter with the 6 zebra loaches and 10 chain loaches from the much older threads. Seemed pretty understocked, I wonder if that played a factor in how shy your zebras were? If I remember correctly you had a mix of rasboras as dithers, but with the numbers you ga...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

The hierarchy and aesthetics are things I hadn't considered Bas, thanks for pointing them out. For both good hierarchy and a more pleasing appearance, I'm now seriously considering only 1 or 2 Botia species instead of 3, as per both your and Nancy's suggestions. I'm fairly inexperienced when it come...

Re: Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Thanks Nancy. I'd be interested to know what your recommendation to skip the yoyos for more Burmese or zebras is based on? If it's temperament, I'm aware of the occassional report of overly feisty yoyos, which will be rehomed and replaced with more of the other loaches if I get some. But other than ...

Need some stocking advice for my second loach tank

Want to run the planned stocking numbers for my second loach tank (mentioned in my signature) by Loaches Online to get some advice. The tank is a 473 liter with a 1.83m x 47 cm footprint and 55 cm height (for the US members, 125 gallon with a 6' x 18.5" footprint and 21" height). My goal is to stock...

Re: Target feeding dwarf chain loaches

Advice all around appreciated, thanks. Tube feeding was what I had in mind, and if they don't catch on I'll be doing it.
But for now, hopefully they'll catch on during the day like Nancy said.

Target feeding dwarf chain loaches

Finally picked up some healthy dwarf chain loaches for my 110 liter! They recently went out of quarantine and into it. However, it looks like the existing green neon/cardinal tetras are so much faster to the food that the loaches have to be target fed. Anyone have experience target feeding dwarf cha...

Re: Mixed-species loach tanks

Nice mix, lots of variety for sure. The differences between the horseface, torpedo, and yoyo loaches especially, they are probably the biggest contributors to the variety. You are correct that there are many similar species to yoyo loaches, which does lead to uncertainty. Botia birdi is one of the m...

Mixed-species loach tanks

Wondering who else has 3 or more loach species together in a tank? When the tank is large enough to accommodate sizable groups of several species, the concept of doing that is very intriguing to me (it is how my planned 473 liter loach tank in my signature will be stocked after all). In that tank, t...

Who has green neon tetras?

Was just curious if anyone else had any green neon tetras? I find myself agreeing with Wikipedia in that they are nowhere near as common as neon or cardinal tetras, which got me curious enough to make this thread and ask. I wonder why they're not so common. Their green-blue stripe is, at least to me...

Re: Why do you like loaches?

Yes, I believe it is Trichomycteridae. 1000% agreed on the silliness, don't know why I didn't mention it. Kuhli loaches dancing up and down the height of the tank followed by curling up all together in a writhing mass, or Botia loaches toying with each other on an almost continuous basis, for exampl...

Re: Angelicus Botia adult size

Happy we could help. No worries on the Burmese loaches fighting, you're correct that it's merely hierarchial.

Do keep us updated, as that sounds like a lively tank!
