Re: Other species to keep with dojo?

As you have the dojo, which is now not legal, you should either kill it or release it. Releasing is, obviously, the wrong solution, so you should keep it. Here, in the Neterlands, people keeping special mammals are facing a similar problem: the species they are keeping is banned. They cannot purchas...

Re: Suggestions. A small fish in a small tank

A pair, that breeds. Perhaps you are thinking of a cichlid species. Dwarf cichlids, such as Apistogramma, Mikrogeophagus, Nannacara do not dig, but only Mikogeophagus pair up. The other species are more harem like, but a 60 liter tank is too small for 2 females. My first cichlid was Nanacara anomala...

Re: Suggestions. A small fish in a small tank

While I wonder why one would have a flow of 1000 l/hr for shrimps, the pictures of the plants show thy grow nicely. Not hapered by the current at all. A 1000 l/hr, 30 times around in an hour, would in a 60 cm tank mean an average waterflow of 18 meters an hour. If the tank is 100 (100 *30 * 20 cm) c...

Re: LIVE BRINE SHRIMP

I would be carefull feeding Artemia too often. Many fishes find shrimps in their habitat, and these are good food. However, allmost all shrimps are contained in a hardy shell, but Artemia are not. Artemia live in areas almost without any animals living there, and therefore they do not need a hardy s...

Re: Treating for ulcers on other fish

What I'd really love to have - but have given up trying to get - is the wild colouration of them. Very rare because no-one buys them and I just can't get any. But they would be wild caught so theoretically, much healthier. And gorgeous! Generally speaking, wild-caught fishes are not healthier than ...

Re: Treating for ulcers on other fish

I would not dare reusing the wood and sand. Boiling will certainly not be enough - the bacteria you are facing are among the most tough ones one can find. Compare this to hospitals, where everything is sterilized at 120 C or more. Bleach is not good for the environment, so I would not try using it o...

Re: Treating for ulcers on other fish

While I understand, and appreciate, the feeling of not wanting to euthanize healthy fish, please do be carefull with them. This fish TBC is highly contagious, and a healthy fish will not show any symptom of being infected. The thing is, TBC bacteria are able to enter a living cell, without killing i...

Re: Filtration

I have an enclosed veranda, which is quite cold in winter, but also well lighted (it faces south). I have 8 tanks there, large ones on the floor, which are unheated, unlighted, but they do have an air driven filtration through Hamburger mats. between the mats I have placed Cyperus umbrella plants, a...

Re: 12 pcs clown loach in 4x2x2 tank?

@ Diana - I think it is 4 *2 feet. Large enough, in my eyes for 12 10 cm clowns, but not larger.

In other words, before getitng the fishes, arrange a good home for them for after the 2 to 3 years they need to grow to that size

Re: Hillstream Loaches dying

Not intending to know better, but a turnover of 50 - which is impressive - is obtainable without much turbulence near the watersurface. That is, such a turnover does not nessessarily reuslt in high oxygen levels. Is it possible to put a rock - or a large stone - in the main outlet, in order to get t...

Re: Sand

My feeling would be that any sand would do. I got mine from a road builder. There was some clay in it, which did get the water a bit murkey, but that was for only a few weks - now more than 10 years back. The plants grew wonderfull on it, but now I am changing the soil, for something a bit richer. N...

Re: New Loach Questions

A clown loach which does noet eat is a matter of some concern. The reason it does not eat can be two: the water might not be good (they like warm water, around 27 C (=80 F), soft and clean). But the other reason can be lack of hiding places. Please change water shortly, of the right temperature and ...
