G. ocellatus either gravid/sick?
Hi all, Long time no post from me, but I've been prompted back onto LOL by one of my hillstream loaches. The details (apologies in advance for length!): I have had an interest in attempting to breed Gastromyzon ocellatus for a couple of years now, and have slowly gathered a small group of them. They...

Ach! I realise I mistyped above, it is indeed closer to 12 gallons than 20. Thanks both again for your advice, I'll stick with my hillies

Re: Would a zodiac loach be ok with gastromyzon species>
Thanks all :) Hmmm maybe best left to my gastros then..... But for this project I'd consider using a larger tank, at least 20L, with more than one M. triangularis. Though the tank I'm describing is more than 20L..? I found a tape measure today, it's 64cm long, 30cm high, 24cm deep (46Litres/20Gallon...

Would a zodiac loach be ok with gastromyzon species>
Hi all, I've just been learning about zodiac loaches and am wondering if my tank is suitable for one. It's only about 10 gallons, but was custom made to have a long footprint as I want to have a small group of Gastromyzon ocellatus in there. I don't have a tape on me at the moment to be specific but...

Re: New Hillstream tank - attempt at breeding G. ocellatus
Hi Danelle, Sorry for the late reply, I've only just seen that comment! The tank structure worked very well, (the amazon swords THRIVED in the set up) but unfortunately I had no success with the loaches themselves. The ocellatus had patchy disease and the zebrinus refused to eat any food I offered a...

Re: Botia Kubotai
Hi,
It probably depends largely on where you are. I live in New Zealand and expect to pay $17-$19 ($14-15US) for a juvenile between 4-6cm.
But in NZ, everything is expensive $15 ($12US) guppies for pity's sake...

Re: Kubotais/dwarf chains in a 50 gallon
Thanks DainBramage (love the name by the way :D) I've heard a few people mentioning the difference in growth rates, is it a male/female thing? You've persuaded me, I'll get some more kubotais and leave the chains for another day. They seem to have plenty of space for now but I think 3ft would be pus...

Kubotais/dwarf chains in a 50 gallon
Hi all Haven't posted in here for quite a while! I was recently lucky enough to buy a Juwel Vision 180 and stand for $280(NZ) which has now been cycled, planted, and stocked using fish from my old tropical tank. There 3 young kubotai loaches (started with 2 which are now about 8cm, added another whi...

Re: New Hillstream tank - attempt at breeding G. ocellatus
Thanks Jim :) There's usually another stream of bubbles coming from the powerhead but it ruins pics a bit! I've found another G. ocellatus and after using a quarentine tank in work have introduced him. So far they're refusing the JBl tabs my previous loaches loved, hopefully with a bit of time and h...

Re: New Hillstream tank - attempt at breeding G. ocellatus
Thanks for the info, I've had some ocellatus females before that seemed to be very healthy and fat, perhaps they were gravid too? It does seem to be quite a challenge to breed most loach species by the looks of things, but something that should be attempted at least! Particularly those limited in na...

New Hillstream tank - attempt at breeding G. ocellatus
Hi all, This is my 4th attempt at a hillstream tank. I learnt about these fish roughly 1 year ago and started off with 2 sharing a 20L tank with 3 comets  Everybody starts somewhere, right? Anyway, I've fallen completely in love with them and have been constantly upgrading my tank for them. We...

3 inches?! That's very impressive indeed He looks stunning in the picture; it must be a result of great care. I'm sorry you lost him, at least by the looks of things he's had a good long life.

Getting rid of Black beard algae in a hillstream tank
Hi all, I was having major problems with BBA recently on my anubias plants, then spreading to the tank walls and rocks, and found that this method really worked. Thought I'd post it up here as I've seen lots of people complaining about this type of algae and it can be difficult to find algae-eating ...

Sorry for the lack of response, I've been away for a while. I had a look in there too Tim, and was able to talk their 'head of fish' guy who says Ninja was sold quite recently. Thanks for trying, and thanks again to everybody's shared viewpoints

Re: To save or not to save? This is my question...
Plaalye - I mean in terms of flow, layout (relatively few plants etc) as well as temperature. Though from what I've read, Gastromyzons are sort of intermediate between cool and tropical waters so personally I wouldn't keep them above 24C - which by the sounds of things wouldn't be suitable for Ninja...
