Sand versus Gravel, Bio-Filter approach

I switched once from gravel to sand. Sand is having better results. I did that due to advice in a german forum. "Mad Duff", thanks for providing such sound detail. heat will be an issue with my tank, as I will built a top-housing for plants growing out of the water, which will be closed. In the summer I would get a real problem... I will rather count on raising the ground ...

thanks... means 6' tank will not stop them growing... I am allready wondering... they are currently in a far too small tank that they are outgrowing (try to get my friends usualy as tiny as I can get them). Thank´s "Mad Duff" for the experience report. I will follow up on that. The catalogs from Osram were talking about much lower heat emission with the new electronic controllers than T8. perhaps that is meant for the transformer replacement, does any considerable amount come from the light-pipes thems...
