Re: Help me build the perfect loach tank

Here I have to disagree with Diana.

Firstly, the ich problem is solved, but more importantly, anything you put into the big tank will be facing a period of more than a week without any fishes in the tank. No ich spore could survioe that

Re: Powerheads

Loaches do that. It must have been over 20 years ago, but I once saw a loach (don't remember what species) swim into the suction tube of an Eheim, so I opened the pot, remouving the substrate in order to see some 6 loaches, looking good by the way, in the pot.

Re: Help me build the perfect loach tank

Quite a few of my tanks are unheated too. I got another with a heater being rathes powerless, and this heater is working 24/7. That one will, therefore, never overheat the tank too What helps is using intern filtration, with a pump in the tank. Assume this pump uses 30 watts. This energy will go int...

Re: Ich?

Although ich is a disease which will hit the fish when they are weakend, for instance new fish are vulnerable, I've never seen ich hitting after moving fishes. Therefore you can move the fishes to the bigger tank, and use this one as a quarantaine tank for now. Later on, I would assume the large tan...

Re: Help me build the perfect loach tank

So are we in consensus that sand is the way to go for a substrate, at 2" for the tank for loaches? unless the bottom is rock, any water, wherever, has a sandy bottom. The word sandy can, however, include even finer particles we rather not have in our tanks. So yes, regardless what you want to keep ...

Re: Help me build the perfect loach tank

don't know whether 400 watt is needed for your 300 L, but 2 is Always safer than 1 In fact, you could get 2 cheap ones, costing much less than 1 good one, and be safer With regard to filtration, the main thing in filtratio nis the volume of the filtrer substrate. This should be at least 6 % of the t...

Re: Help me build the perfect loach tank

@ sand, I once had the road builder put a cubic meter of sand in my yard, and this is the sand I use since. Originally it was rich, with clay and so on, but in the case of the tank above, the sand has been used in a tank for 4 years, and all nutrients werre used. So I added clay and so on. In other ...

Re: Help me build the perfect loach tank

With regard to the plants, I'd choose Cryptocorynes. They don't grow fast, so you will not need to get your hands wet every week or so - with the resulting advantages for the fish. Loaches like quiet tanks. I have a 75 * 70 * 30 cm tank (30 is het height) with a lot of wood in the back, and Crypto's...

Re: Ich?

Raising the tempt to 30 C - that´s close to 86 F - is a good opportunity in case the fish can easily withstand that temperature. I keep Cherry barb, I think you mean Puntius titteya, aroiund 21 C, and no 30 C weould be too high. In case the treatment is nog good for the patient, it will not help. St...

Re: Ich?

While large waterchanges help fighting ich, and certainly cleaning the substrate does, the problem is you will neeg certain bacteria in the tank. Those that make NO3- out of NO2-. That is, these bacteria detoxify these nitrites by making nitrates, being 10.000 times less toxic. So, while your need f...

Hi Nancy. I do like the acrylic for the weight thing (...) but this is going on the second floor and I’m just worried. Building regulations will differ widely - but how mucht does a filled tank weigh? A US gallon, 3.8 liters, weights 3.8 kilos. That is, 29 gallon of water will weigh 110.2 kilos, or...

Re: Ich?

@ how long

Ich has a cycle, after leaving the fish it takes 24 hrs to produce spores which, depending on the species, might live for 72 hrs before they die.

Assuming the spores need time to develop into a white spot after finding a fish, I would say - about a week after the last spot disappeared.

Re: Botia striata questions AKA zebra

With regard to the amount of fishes, I do agree that 8 Brachydanio rerio and 8 Botia striata will not be a problem. However, looking atthe picture of the tank, I wonder why you have a `look through` tank. Were the back window and the side windows black, the tank would be a lot more quiet (nicer to l...
